Gay Friendly Employers - USA

October 6th, 2007

While there may always be a certain amount of discrimination in some area’s things do appear to be improving in the workplace for Gay, Bisexual and Transgender employees (GLBT).

Major companies are taking the lead by increasing their benefits for GLBT employees. This may be to embrace all sexualities and genders but it may also be a clever move to be ranked highly in that area as with all other area’s that are subject to a ‘ranking’ system.

Cynicism aside, this improvement in benefits and rights can only be a good thing for the GLBT community.

More than ever before, major U.S. companies are expanding benefits and protections for their gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender (GLBT) employees, according to a new report from The Advocacy Group for the Human Rights Campaign (HRC).

The HRC conducted a report known as the Corporate Equality Index, which found vast improvement on the previous years statistics with regards to health benefits for same sex couples as well as major companies taking a more proactive approach against banning discrimination against transgendered employees.

In 2006, the report confirmed that 138 employers had received perfect scores based on their ranking system. Companies include: Bank of America, Cisco Systems, Gap, IBM, Intel, Motorola, PepsiCo, and Visa.
