Leave your current job to pursue your dream

June 6th, 2008

Many people out in the world have a dream; so often most of those people work in a high paying job which are not the dream they have in their head. What do you do about it? There are a few things to consider before you leave a high paying job to pursue a dream.

  • It will take time to reach the reality of the dream
  • It will take effort to reach the reality of the dream
  • There will most likely be financial turmoil chasing the dream
  • You will most likely be living on less income
  • If you fail to plan out the way to the dream, you plan to fail at getting to the dream
  • Not everyone will understand your motives
  • A backup plan is required

When you leave the high paying job to pursue your dream some keys to financial management will be needed.

  • Crunch the numbers (find the lowest amount you can live on)
  • Manage your money (ex: monthly budgeting, tracking daily spending)
  • Embrace frugality (ex: cut the dining out, movie nights, DSL, two cell phones or ride the bus or bike)
  • Bolster the emergency fund (6 months income at the lowest level as a goal)
  • Seek professional advice (ex: tax lawyer, accountant)
  • Pursue multiple income streams (ex: part time job, side jobs, more ways of financially pursuing the dream)
  • Define goals (what are you seeing in 5, 10 years?)
  • Focus on what is important (what is needed to make the dream a reality)

The following are some things to get rid of so you can leave the high paying job to pursue your dream.

  • All self doubt. Doubt is the enemy
  • Rid yourself of the negative persons in your life (the neysayers who tell you not to follow the dream)
  • Any financial burden that will get in the way (ex: high interest credit cards, the car loan)

What should you do when you are on the road to leave a high paying job so you pursue the dream?

  • Keep the end in mind (have an idea of what the dream will look like when you get there)
  • Stay focused (don’t start working on other ideas that detract from your current dream)
  • Get inspired (read, learn, about others who achieve their dreams)
  • Celebrate every success (no matter the size, celebrate the forward motion)

If you want to leave the high paying job to pursue a dream, it is always possible. Proper planning and determination are a must to achieve any worthwhile goal in life. It is said that 98% of the people do what they are second best at for a living.
