Surviving layoffs and prospering

The worry in any job is losing that job. It’s been the curse of the workforce, for the last century, and many people see it as the implied threat of work in the traditional sense.

That’s changing, and not before time. The dreaded Pink Slip can be a ticket to a better life. You do have to adapt, and deal with unfamiliar situations, but on the whole that can be a much better move than stagnation and no prospects, in a dreary looking economy.

Because the economy is effectively stalled, your move can give you some extra cash, and give you a jump start into a new life.

Hang on to the cash. You’ll be glad to know it’s there. Sock it away safely, and get on with your obvious next moves.

Cover your income. Either through welfare, or setting up some sort of budget where you get regular deposits from your savings like income, and can manage your own money effectively.

Check out your options, carefully. This is where you may be able to break free, and set up your own sources of income, as well as getting another job. People tend to forget that in any job, you’re out of circulation with the rest of your life for that amount of time every day.

Now you have the time and the space to look at scenarios, ways of earning money, and generally doing some maintenance on your life.

Don’t waste that time. Don’t even think about trying to get back on the horse that’s bolted. You want a job that suits your needs, more than you need a job that requires you to meet its needs.

Not trying to sound cute, but there’s always a better job somewhere, if you can find it.

You probably do know what you want, but if you haven’t had time to think about how to find it, work on these principles:

• The job is reliable as a source of income.
• The job is convenient, and doesn’t cost money in overheads to just get there and do it.
• The job goes somewhere, has definite potentials, and isn’t full of surprises in terms of your time and space, making demands which seem to be negatives.
• It’s something where you’re sure of your abilities.
• You have real talents and interests in that area.
• It’s a true career job in the sense that your work is meaningful to you.

You see what we’re talking about. This is at least part of a dream job, and current employment studies are saying those are the jobs people should actually be doing.

Most jobs aren’t in that category. The old job designs are so far out of date it’d be funny if it wasn’t such a waste of people and their talent. They’d be more appropriate in a social history museum than a modern workforce. The whole global workplace is remodeling itself on the possibilities of the new technology, and those jobs, at last, are on the way out.

In one way you may well be lucky to get out of old style workplaces. Those that don’t go broke will have to be virtually rebuilt from the ground up. That means you’d have just stuck around until they pulled down the business structure and you had to leave later anyway.

Your layoff can be the best thing that’s ever happened to you, particularly if you were feeling like you were a galley slave on a ship to nowhere in that job.

Important: We’re not saying this is easy, but we are saying it’s viable.

You can get yourself into a position where you’re calling the shots on your income and your life, not someone else.

• You may be able to work a situation where you’re getting a regular income from one source, and creating more income from other sources for yourself, doing independent work.
• You might be able to have several regular sources, and remain independent, doing other work at your prices, not the sort of value discount you get working for people paid to be watching pennies.
• You can also set up other sources of income, like investments, cash management, stocks, whatever, at your own pace. That generates a compound interest effect, and builds up multiple nest eggs over time.

Sound like it’s worth doing?

Enough said. Take a deep breath, have a ball, and see how long it takes you to become a multi millionaire.
