An admission consultant provides guidance to the student’s community in choosing the right educational program. It is the responsibility of an admission consultant to determine whether the candidate is suitable for the program he or she is applying for. After making this decision, an admission consultant has to provide the student with all the necessary information related to the program, which includes:

  • Providing necessary training for the entrance examination
  • Offering assistance in preparing a statement of purpose
  • Reviewing the application of the student to various institutions
  • Suggesting changes in the application form.

An admission consultant can work as a freelancer or for an educational institution or a large consultancy to manage the admission for specific programs. Certain consultants specialize in a specific area like overseas admissions, MBA admissions and postgraduate admissions, among others.

Required Education

You may take multiple pathways to become an admission consultant; however, a strong academic background with a master’s degree, proficiency in verbal communication, and flairs for writing, testing and recruiting are important qualities required to be successful in this career. Updating your resume with relevant details (like being involved with the admission process while at college or helping someone secure admission in an institute) could prove an advantage. You should also add to your resume any experience in working for a marketing campaign or as a recruiter. If you have no prior experience in the field of recruitment or admission, you could apply for a job in an admission office, provided you have worked in a clerical setting. This job could serve as a starting point in becoming a private consultant.

Basic Tasks

 Everyday tasks of an admission consultant involve the following: 

  • Interacting with students and analyzing their strengths and weaknesses
  • Studying the academic record of the students
  • Determining which course would be ideally suited for a student based on the interaction and academic records
  • Providing the students with all necessary information regarding the program
  • Offering assistance to students in the admission process
  • Arranging all admission-related events in the educational institution where employed
  • Convince the students to join a course by explaining why a specific program in a specific institution is the best available.


The salary of an admission consultant varies according to experience. For example, an admission consultant with 1 to 4 years of experience gets a median salary of $30,000, whereas one with an experience of more than 10 years may earn around $40,000 to $50,000. However, the salary would vary, depending on the employer and state in which the institution is located.

Opportunities for Advancement

Once proved efficient, an admission consultant could be promoted to Admission Manager or Placement Consultant for the entire institution. Or you might be offered a job at the human resource department. It is also possible for an admission consultant to work as a freelancer for a considerable time and then set up a private admission consultancy.
