CAD Designer Jobs: Career Information

CAD, or Computer Aided Design, is a generic description for a wide range of software applications. CAD designer jobs cover a huge scope of industries, some quite different, like architecture and fashion. Computer Assisted Design software is used to do detailed plans and designs of products to industrial standards.

Education and training

CAD is now the primary design methodology in all industries. It's a uniquely adaptable method for producing detailed plans of products, and is an essential qualification for all engineers and industrial designers. It includes 2D and 3D modeling, and is capable of creating highly detailed, fully measured designs according to specifications. 

CAD training and qualifications may be obtained in various contexts in terms of career education. CAD elements are often part of formal education in some professions. In architecture CAD skills and competencies to fixed degree standards are required as part of formal qualifications. CAD training is also offered as a separate course for those wishing to enter the professions, or as a general introduction to the processes of CAD for students. 

The cross-mix of qualifications required in CAD designer jobs can be considerable. In architecture and civil engineering, CAD is often also required to conform to statutory requirements, and provide detailed plans suitable for use by manufacturers, builders, aerospace designs and onsite engineers. CAD training is therefore based on the requirements of the industry, and training is tailored to the specific disciplines.

The work environment

CAD work ranges from the extremely detailed design of components to designs for whole aircraft and ships, buildings, urban planning and industrial machines. The workplace is highly structured, and plans and designs, like their products, are assembled in stages by the designers. CAD designers progress in degrees of difficulty from entry level basic designs up through advanced design schematics. 

This is demanding work, and the fact of being computer based only simplifies the modeling, not the complexity and detail of plans. CAD designers may have to spend days in constructing models to match specifications, working with varying levels of detail on components. CAD designs may have to be created to provide multiple levels of a design's structure, literally from the base through to full assembly of a product. Using CAD, it's possible to literally map an assembly from its most detailed components to its finished form. That's about as simple as it sounds. The CAD designer's work is under intense scrutiny at all stages for accuracy and meeting specification requirements. Designs made under commercial contracts must comply with contract requirements, within contract times. CAD designers can work long hours in this environment. 

The career environment

The CAD designer's career pays back all the hard work in career opportunities. Advanced CAD designers are in high demand. They're indispensable to product design, and invaluable in quality control on design projects. CAD design businesses literally can't work without them. Experienced CAD designers have their own design portfolios, testimonies to their competence and experience. CAD experts can earn an excellent income as consultants, troubleshooters, and business advisers. Their expertise is a passport to the top bracket of their industries.
