Construction Manager Career Information

The construction manager is the manager of a project, they are typically people with high levels of qualifications and experience in the building industry. The construction manager reports to the site owner. The role of a manager effectively includes three functional roles:

  • Occupational Health and Safety: The construction manager is responsible for safe practice on site. This involves strict application of all industrial safety laws regarding construction, including electrical safety requirements, heavy machinery operation, use of power tools and other areas covered by safety laws. The construction manager is also responsible for safety notices posted around the site and the safety of visitors to the site, including enforcement of policies like the "hard hat" requirements for construction sites.
  • Problem solving: Construction projects can be very complex. The construction manager is also the person required to deal with any problems in relation to the above areas. This aspect of the job could fairly be described as a job in itself. As both the manager and a technical expert, the construction manager has to also be the fixer of problems.
