Freelance Videographer: Setting Career Goals

Working as a freelance videographer can provide you with a lot of opportunities and potential in your career. When you are in this line of work, setting career goals is a very important part of being successful. Here are a few things to consider about setting career goals as a freelance videographer.

Planning out Your Career

When you are starting out as a freelance videographer, you need to spend some time and plan out your career. This does not necessarily mean that you have to write down what you are going to do every day for your entire career. However, you should set up some checkpoints so that you will see how you are progressing in your overall career. For example, you might write on a piece of paper where you want to be in 1, 5, 10 and 15 years. Each one of these goals should get progressively bigger from the last one. When you do this, you are going to be able to have something to shoot for throughout your career. It is going to be sort of like a road map that you can follow along the way.

Start Small

Most freelance videographers start out relatively small. You should most likely take any jobs that you can get early on in your career. You should start out with small goals as far as what types of jobs you are going to do and build your portfolio up. For example, many beginning freelance videographers start out by doing weddings and parties. It may not be the most prestigious project that you could work on, but it will get your name out there and it will allow you to perfect your craft.

Gain Clients

In your videographer career planning, you should also spend some time thinking about how many clients you want to gain on a regular basis. You might start out with gaining only one or two clients per month when you get started. Then, as you get into your business further, you should increase this total. You might want to set a much bigger goal like obtaining 10 new clients every month. With this type of goal, you want to make it a progressive process. This means that you should continually set bigger goals when you reach your existing goals.

Monetary Goals

As a freelance videographer, you should also spend some time thinking about how much money you would like to eventually make. At first, it may seem difficult to make enough money to pay the bills. However, as you continue to progress in your freelance videographer career, you are going to be able to make substantial amounts of money. There are many freelance videographers out there that make a great wage and live comfortably. Set a definite monetary goal that you would like to reach. You should also think about setting separate monetary goals for each year so that you can continue to grow your income over time.
