How to Become a Neurosurgeon

In order to successfully become a neurosurgeon, you have to go through a rigorous process of education and training. Once you have completed the process, you will be in one of the most prestigious careers in the world. Here are the basics of how to become a neurosurgeon.


The beginning of the process to become a neurosurgeon should start whenever you are still in high school. You need to take as many math and science classes as possible. Be sure to take anatomy and physiology if you can. Once you have graduated from high school, you should go to an undergraduate study program. You could potentially get an undergraduate degree in any field you choose. However, if you want the best chance at getting into medical school, you should most likely get a degree in a science-related field or in a premed program. Many colleges offer premed programs which will give you a head start on your further education to become a neurosurgeon.

After you have graduated from college, you need to get into medical school. In order to accomplish this, you must first pass the MCAT. Until you pass this test, you will not be able to get into any medical schools. Once you have passed the MCAT, you can start applying to many different medical schools.

Once you are accepted into medical school, you will attend school for another 4 years in most cases. This will give you a doctorate degree. In medical school, you are going to learn general information about being a doctor and providing patient care. Once you graduate from medical school, you will need to move into a neurosurgeon residency program. This process can be very competitive and difficult. There are only about 100 neurosurgery residency programs in the country, and most of them only accept between one and five applicants every year. The process of a neurosurgery residency will last somewhere between 6 and 8 years.


Many neurosurgeons will also go through an internship program in order to learn how to become a successful neurosurgeon. You will typically complete this process in a hospital or clinical setting.


In order to complete the process of becoming a neurosurgeon, you will have to obtain the appropriate licensing and certification. Once you have completed all of your formal education and residency program, you will be able to take the licensing exam to become a neurosurgeon. This exam is going to be administered on a state level. If you pass the exam, you can move on and start practicing as a neurosurgeon.
