How to Become a Travel Writer
The process to become a travel writer is not the same for everyone. Some people have successfully taken the route to being a travel writer in a short period, while others have to work for a long time just to get a foot in the door. There are many steps that you could take in order to get started as a travel writer.
Hone Your Skills
As a travel writer, you need to have a sound grasp of writing. You may want to take a course on effective writing or use some of the other tools out there to help your writing style. For example, you could hire an online editing service to give you feedback about your writing ability. Work on your writing skills as much as possible before attempting to get a job as a travel writer. The available positions for travel writers are limited, and there are many people who want to get involved in this field. Because of this, you have to be very good at what you do and separate yourself from the pack. When writing about travel-related topics, you have to be able to create a picture in your reader's mind. You have to use vivid details and make the reader want to travel.
Once you have worked on your writing ability, you may want to start making some free submissions to travel sites. There are numerous websites out there that will take submissions from anyone. You can write some articles about places that you have been to and submit them to these sites. This will help get your name out and show everyone what you can do. Sometimes, editors who work for travel sites look at these sites to find people who are good at what they do. You never know who could be reading one of your articles and ultimately offer you a job.
Look for Jobs
The next part of the process involves looking for a travel writer job. You may want to look for job openings and classified ads from companies that are looking for travel writers. It will most likely be tough to find a position advertised. In addition to looking for advertised job openings, you need to be proactive and contact companies that may need travel writers. Talk to the different travel magazines and to websites that concern travel. Ask them if they have any need for an entry-level travel writer. They may be willing to take your application in case something opens up if nothing is currently available. Submit your resume or application and provide them with samples of your work.
In most cases, these companies will start you out slowly as a travel writer. They will give you one or two assignments to do so that they can see how you work. Try to take extra time with these first assignments, as they will make a big difference in how much work you are able to get from them in the future. At some point, you could progress into a full-time position if you do a good job.
