How to Become an Architectural Technician

Architectural Technicians (AT) are specialists who apply architectural technology when designing and constructing a building. They play a vital role in the architectural design services, but they cannot practice independently. Their work is more concerned about the technical aspects in the construction of a building.

Work Environment

They have to work in cooperation with fellow ATs and support architectural technologists, architects, engineers, surveyors and other construction personnel.

Duties

  • Draft technical drawings to help architects and engineers with whom they are working. Being a team player is essential.
  • Prepare cost estimation of commercial or residential buildings.
  • Carry out feasibility studies and find the feasibility of the initial design and work after consultation with the construction managers. They have to do necessary modifications if the design is not practically feasible.
  • Check for compliance with the building codes.
  • Collect field data from the project site and also test the quality of the construction materials.

Educational and Other Skills Required

  • After your high school education, complete the architectural technology program, which consumes four years. Even various types of engineers can engage appropriate training programs to start practicing as an AT. You need to achieve “A” level status or become B.Tech qualified to become an AT.
  • Accurate and precise drawing ability is a must and so is strong designing and drafting technical capability.
  • You should know about the practical implications of construction. Thus, you should know about things like earth moving equipment and other construction materials and machines.
  • ATs should have solid communication and problem solving skills.
  • Maintain and recognize ideas about the construction regulations and issues related with violations.
  • Knowledge of computers and their applications for architectural drawings is necessary. Training and understanding in computer-aided design (CAD) software is a must. They should also know how to make printouts of the drawings after making required and strategic modifications.
  • Excellent knowledge of trigonometry, geometry, physics, art and art history is needed.
  • Find the various construction companies and architectural firms that appeal to you and, if possible, attend an internship with any one of them to gain practical experience.
  • Become a loyal member of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) after two or three years of experience.
  • Practice as an apprentice under the able guidance of an experienced AT for an initial few years. Usually, the apprenticeship extends for two to four years and is essential.
  • Prepare your resume with all your vital accomplishments and credentials and the construction projects you have handled so far with accurate references.
  • Do not squander vacations: pay attention to the history of architecture in your new environment.
  • Attend job fairs for architectural organizations and use this time to network and show your pleasant demeanor.

An AT acts as an intermediary between the construction workers and the architects who concentrate on the aesthetic appeal of a construction job and assignment. By no means is this an easy job; you should have a sincere commitment to constantly improve your architectural knowledge.
