A freelance writing career can be an excellent choice for those who want to be in control of the type of work they want to do. You can work from home and you can decide who you want to work for. There are many freedoms that come with freelance work. You should remember, though, that it is still work, and it is a business that you need to manage. 1. Create a Business Plan

A business plan is essential for anyone that will be in charge of her own business. Your business plan does not have to be a formal document that is 100 pages long, but it should include your long-term and short-term goals. Outline the things that you would like to accomplish over the next several months and then include one or two long-term goals. Your business plan should include things like how much money you want to make, but it could also include where you would like to be published and what fields you would like to break into.

2. Decide What Kind of Freelance Writing You Want to Do

You should ask yourself if you want to concentrate primarily on print media or if web content is more along the lines of your interest. Take into account all the things you need for your personal life and all the expenses you might have related to business and do not forget about health insurance. If you are calculating these on a monthly basis, multiply by 12, and you will have the amount that you need to make in one year. Next, decide how much you want to work. Are you going to work 40 hours a week, or do you want to work only 30 hours a week? Assume that you want to take a couple of weeks' vacation time and multiply by 50. Now, divide the amount that you want to make in a year by the amount of hours you will work in a year, and you will have an hourly rate that you can use to base your fees on.
