An Internal Communication Manager (ICM) is a person with a key role in an organization. The ICM facilitates effective communication between different parts of an organization so that maximum efficiency is reached. Some organizations might have a separate internal communication department otherwise the internal communication manager supervises these types of messages.

A bachelor's degree in management, or other communications or public relations, is the minimum requirement. You can join a firm as public relations officer in an entry level capacity, so that you can hone your writing and editing skills. To become an ICM, you need experience, training, and knowledge in the following areas:

Typical ICM Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Learn clearly about the company's principles and goals and apply them while writing web content, internal memos, expediting communication between various departments and when drafting and designing the company's calendar.
  • Correct the grammatical errors and evaluate the clarity in other people's internal messages.
  • Write messages related to corporate communication, project or promotions, marketing strategies as per company's ethics of business, media planning, etc. Carry the responsibility corresponding to delivering sensitive information to staff in different departments, timely and consistently.
  • Ability to write communications which will motivate and create an impact on the employees; it should motivate them to work loyally and productively on behalf of the organization.
  • Build liaison with employees in various departments. The ICM should study the pulse of the employees and also with the board of directors to remain keen on the employer's scenario.
  • Lead the implementation of internal communication strategies and to support the organizational development.
  • Support the chief of communications and/or director of communications in the implementation of various policy changes, modifications or strategy realignments.

Different Designations of an ICM

Specializations - in a few organizations, we can see different ICM position titles or designations with little change in actual duties. For instance, some of the common titles are: channel management, human resource communications, project communication, event management, speech writer, social media correspondent and so forth.

The reputation of a company depends mainly on their image. ICMs with specialization in media play a vital role in promoting and protecting the image of a company.


Students in communication and business administration courses are on track to become an ICM. They are familiarized with the theories related to communication processes and their impact on organizations. These subjects emphasize the concepts of internal communication, mass media, modern information projection and communication technologies.


ICM's average annual is around $66,000 per year. This figure can change based on many factors like: roles played in the particular organization, employer's location, industry or experience.

Career Advancement

After a few years as an ICM, there could be a shot to be promoted as the head of the communications department, then as the director of communications and into public affairs depending on the organization and the industry in which they are residing.
