School Superintendent Career Information

School principles report to school superintendents. Superintendence oversee the entire school system, which are sometimes called districts for boards, depending on the state you reside in. It is their job to monitor and communicate with principles in relation to their schools operation and headquarters.

Job description

Each school system has its own operations, the day to day tasks are done by the superintendents. In general, they are responsible for managing all aspects of a schools operation. They spend most of their time attending meetings due to this reason and also meet with a lot of people including elected officials, union members, teachers, parents and students.

One of the most common duties of a superintendent is to hire and fire school principals and vice principals. Some superintendents also are responsible for hiring teachers, but will vary depending on the state. Another important thing that superintendents do is watch what the school system is providing to its students in relation to what is being taught. This can be things such as is the school standards, teachers helping students and our policies being followed. To do this, they travel from school to school and evaluate the entire performance of the school faculty and tried to suggest new ways to teach students and helping them achieve success.

Working conditions

Superintendents work for school systems in offices or at a school location. This career requires a lot of communication and interaction with a variety of different people. Super attendants spend most of their days working with initiative staff, school officials and other school members. Most people in this position work full-time, generally they are scheduled to work regular business hours which includes eight hours a day and 40 hours per week.

However, many superintendents work more than this as they often have to attend meetings in the evenings and on weekends. For some, this job requires a lot of trouble as they are involved in traveling from school to school. There can be a lot of stress about this job and superintendence are expected to ensure their schools are met by guidelines and standards. If they do not, a lot of pressures put on a school superintendent and their overall performance is evaluated based on the school system of providing education.

Earnings

School superintendents usually work full-time and get paid an annual salary. The earnings depend on the school system they work at and the level of responsibility they hold. Although figures are not related, most earn between somewhere in the range of 85,000 to 125,000 per year. Senior superintendents to work in very large districts can earn up to 200,000 per year after they obtained a number of years of experience. In addition to their salaries, super tenants receive benefits such as health, dental coverage, paid vacation and retirement plans.

Education

To become a superintendent, you need years of experience as a principal and some even have experience as a teacher. You should have a Masters degree in education or related field and several years of experience in management. Although it’s not required, many applicants and PhD in education while their principles as this provides them a strong advantage because they are already in the educational field and they’re getting experience as the same time.
