Statistics Degree Career Options

Based on work experience and knowledge acquired from their statistics degree programs, statisticians design surveys and other instruments to collect data. Once the data is received, they analyze it and prepare reports based on the results of the data and their knowledge of survey design. Statisticians work in many industries, from agriculture to health.

Agriculture and the Environment

Statistics students that are interested in the environment and in food and the food supply can find careers in agriculture and the environment. Statisticians in this area can find work with state and federal government organizations. They can also work with international development and aid organizations that promote improvements through better food production. In this field, statisticians study food production and animal populations and collect data about crops and pesticide use, to name only a few of the areas that statisticians can study. Statisticians in the agriculture and environmental services industries should be interested in agriculture, animal science, biology and environmental science. If pursuing international work, they should study a foreign language.


Statisticians in the business industry work for banks, financial services firms and marketing and insurance companies. In a bank, a statistician may examine customer satisfaction surveys or scour data looking for fraud or other criminal activity. In a financial services company, a statistician may prepare a statistical model about the future of an equity or a commodity or other investment. As a marketer, a statistician will prepare surveys and experiments to examine customer behavior and make recommendations for new products or improving existing product lines. In the insurance industry, many statisticians will continue their education to become actuaries who use statistical and mathematical models to determine insurance rates. Statisticians in this area should be interested in economics, consumer behavior and financial services.


Statisticians can pursue advanced degrees or a teacher's certificate to teach mathematics and statistics to students. At the secondary school level, a person with an undergraduate degree in statistics can teach mathematics and statistics to students. Depending on the laws in the state where they teach, they may be able to pursue certification while teaching high school students. Statisticians who complete a PhD may pursue opportunities to work in academia, teaching undergraduate and graduate students, conducting research and publishing in their field.


Statisticians work for the government on a wide range of projects. Some, for example, collect and analyze census data. Others write reports and analyses of the labor market and economic output of the country. Statisticians in this area will gather information on a wide range of products and government services, such as imports and exports, transportation records and demographic information. Most statisticians who work for the government are interested in economics and in public service, and many of them possess a graduate degree in statistics.


In the health industry, some statisticians assist in the design of clinical trials and gather biostatistics for biotechnology and health care companies and investment firms. Others assist public health professionals in analyzing data concerning epidemics and promoting preventative treatments. A clinical trial gathers information about the effects of a drug or treatment on an affected population. A statistical analysis of the data will help explain the effectiveness, drug interactions and side effects of a new treatment. Statisticians will work with epidemiologists and other health care professionals to analyze current and historical outbreaks of diseases. They will use their models to promote public health and welfare. Statisticians in this area should be interested in biology and chemistry, as well as in public health and health promotion.
