What should I expect from aircraft engineering apprenticeships?
Future aircraft engineers must obtain work skills on the job through aircraft engineer apprenticeships for at least 1 to 3 years following school. Typically, an individual seeking an aircraft engineer apprenticeship should expect to apply as early as possible--as much as a year in advance--with an aircraft manufacturing company that offers such a career opportunity. The apprenticeship will involve studying under experienced and licensed aircraft engineers, working in physically demanding conditions and learning the techniques to plan, design, build, inspect and tear down various aircraft components in a large warehouse manufacturing environment. Once the required time is completed, the engineer apprentice can take the aircraft engineering mechanical exam (AME) and become an official aircraft engineer.
