Working in the Hotel Department on a cruise ship.

This department covers all the functions on the ship excluding those related to navigation engine and entertainment, i.e. housekeeping, concessionaires, pursers and food and beverage. The jobs here are comparables to the jobs in a five/seven star hotel. The positions that are listed under this department are listed in descending order below with a brief description. Most of the positions here can be achieved through promotions to the higher position.

  • Chief Purser/ Hotel Manager: This is the Head of the Department and it involves the management and supervision of the staff in all departments with the exception of the deck and engine staff. The applicant would be required to have no less than five years experience in a similar position on land or ship, know English well and posses a degree in Hotel Management. This job comes with a salary of US -5800 per month.
  • Deputy Purser/ Assistant Hotel Manager: This is a supervisory job which entails the coordination and supervision of the staff in all departments except the deck and engine staff. The job requirements are more or less the same as above. The salary ranges between US and 4700. The incumbent can expect promotion to the post of Chief Purser within 1-3 years.
  • Purser: The job of the Purser involves the supervision of all the day-to-day administration of the Pursers office and the front desk. The applicant would be required to have a hotel management degree and know English well; previous experience would be an advantage. The salary ranges between US and 3200. The incumbent can expect to be promoted to the post of Deputy Purser within 1-2 years.
  • Assistant Purser: This job covers the duties of the reception and takes care of the accommodation, money transactions, general information dissemination and on-the-ship announcements. The incumbent would be required to posses a university degree and hotel experience (1-2 years). Side by side he/she should be fluent in English and at least one more European language such as French, German, Italian, Spanish, etc. The monthly salary ranges between US and 1800.
  • Junior Assistant Purser: This the equivalent of a receptionist in hotel line (on land). The applicant would be required to have a University degree, have a good command on English and know at least one more European language. The monthly salary ranges between US and 1800. The incumbent can expect promotion to the position of Assistant Purser in about 1-2 years time.
  • Crew Purser: This person would be responsible for the overall administration of the crew. The applicant would be required to have previous experience and a University degree and know English fluently; if he/she has knowledge of accounting it would be added advantage. The salary ranges between US and 2200.
  • Shore Excursion Manager: This person would be in-charge of the supervision, presentation as well as promotion of the shore excursions. The applicant will require to have travel-related experience, a travel and tourism degree and/or at least one year experience on ship as Cruise Staff or Asst. Shore Excursion Manager. Needless to say that he/she should have a good command on English. The salary ranges between US and 3200.
  • Assistant Shore Excursion Manager: This person would be responsible for the promotion activities and sales of shore excursions. The requirements for this job are similar to that listed above. The incumbent can expect promotion to the post of Manager in the course of 1-2 years. The salary ranges between US and 2100.
  • Cost Accountant: The incumbents main responsibility will be the inventory control of all the food related operations on the ship. This will mostly involve the supervising and generation of the food and supply costs on a daily and weekly and monthly basis. The job entails extensive computer work; hence the applicant should have some computer education. The salary ranges between US 2500.
  • Revenue Accountant: This person would be responsible for the supervision and overseeing the revenue flow on the ship. The incumbent would be required to have an excellent accounting background, good managerial skills and fluency is English is another must. He/she will be responsible. The salary ranges between US -2500.
