Am about to retire after 23 years serving in the military. I have been the commanding officer of military bands for the past 16 years. I have a masters degree in music, but am really not interested in teaching public school. In the course of my career, I have had significant experiences with various aspect of the Human Resources business - recruiting, employee relations, evaluations, budget management, etc. I'd like some advice on what type of education or training to pursue to best set me up for a management career or perhaps something in the HR business. For example, should I pursue a business degree? Of would I be better off going on with my music and go for a DMA or a PhD in Education?

It might sound a simple question, and it is!

If you had a personal choice, without any interference in your thinking, responsibilities or finance, what would that job look like. Do this thinking first before you overlay it with the other 'stuff'.

Then focus on how you can get as close as possible to the type of job you really want. You've served your time, now you have the freedom to choose, which can be a challenge.

Talk to human resource professionals.

Call up some large companies and ask to talk to the Human Resource Manger. Explain to them were you are coming from and what you want to do. See if they can let you come in and watch them work for a day. Learn about all of the different human resource jobs.

Find out from the professionals what kind of education you need to get hired. They are the experts on what they want.

Check out The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and find a local chapter.

If you want to pursue a career in busines, then do it. You will be in for a few years of scholing; of course, you would be needing a good bit of schooling for a phD also.
