Hello,

can you tell me where the body of a cover letter starts and where it ends? I have to fill out an application form on the internet where it says:

Please provide information on the following area(s) and copy text as appropriate from your resume/CV. Please paste only the body of your cover letter below. Please provide information you would typically include in your cover letter.

I would omit everything that is related to a person, namely “Dear Mr...” and the closing part (“Thank you for your time and consideration… Yours Sincerely ”). What do you think?

I've already spoken to the HR-Manager and he asked me to send him an email when I submit the application form because he will handle my application. So I will already address him in this email (and I don't want to call him again only because of this silly question). Since the number of words is limited to 300 I'm glad about every word that I can omit.

Thanks in advance,
Peter

Keep the name, if you're applying for a specific job (and if you're not, then how are you writing a cover letter??). Keep the "thank you for your consideration." I'm guessing the only thing you probably need to leave out are possible the date and your signature.

I was looking at this and I think Katja might be correct. The only thing I could find was on sending a letter for an online job, and it doesn't specify if it is for an emailed letter or not. If you know the person's name, as you do in this case, I would go ahead and include it. Otherwise, I would leave it off.

The body of your cover letter should start with "Dear HR/To whom it may concern" etc and it should end with Sincerely, XYZ". They are probably not interested in the address of the employer, and contact information (D'oh...they are the employer).
That's the body of your cover letter in my opinion. Also....do it yourself, HRs don't have time to "handle" your application.

It sounds like they're wanting the 3-5 paragraphs a person would typically incorporate into a letter. Because of the way the instructions are written, utilizing a bullet point layout will make the presentation easier to follow. Not all cover letters follow a paragraph-only layout, so utilizing 5-8 bullet points, focusing on "cream of the crop" details will provide readers with a clean line-up to read. One more alternative for you to think about ...

Good luck to you, Peter!
