Being a job-seeker can be a frightening and stressful experience. The longer the search goes on, the more stressful and confusing it can be. A job seeker might question if they are doing anything right, what they should change, what flaw is keeping them from employment. Really, finding a job is the matter of two halves 'clicking': the employer has to think you will fit their needs, and the employer needs to offer the job seeker a job they want. It is not a specifically timed process and there are no rigid rules to lead one to success. Being a successful job seeker means educating yourself about the current job market and being savvy in your search techniques, but the other factors that exist can be out of a person's control. The things a job seeker may fear cannot be completely controlled, but are common among all job seekers:

1. I have no experience, so they don't want me. It is not necessarily that you do not have the experience, but that maybe you are not marketing it to them in a way that they are recognizing. A resume can only tell so much and should not be overly detailed. Try to read ads carefully and make your cover letter the tool to relay your skills a bit more. Wait for the interview to be detailed, however.

2. I got fired. How should I explain that? Just because you got fired does not mean that you will never have another job again. Be honest in your disclosure, and do not offer too much information. The reality of being fired is that lots of people get fired; how you react to the question might matter more than the reason you were fired.

3. My resume needs help! Checking and updating your resume or CV regularly, plus having someone else review it and give you feedback, can help greatly. Consult resources for formatting and content issues if needed.

4. I get nervous during interviews. Is there a way to keep me from messing up? Anticipating questions and being prepared can relieve a lot of interview anxiety.

5. I need a job, quick! Panicking and seeming desperate can deter an employer from hiring you sometimes. If you are feeling anxious, and as difficult as it can be, try to save it for after interacting with your prospective employer. If you search hard but have no success, try to change things up a little but DO NOT panic. It will show through in the application process.

6. I haven't been employed for a while. This seems to be hurting me, so what do I do? Current job trends are making this more prevalent. If you are able to explain an employment gap for a good reason, or at least be able to account for it in an honest manner, that can help you out. Try to list whatever occupied you in the meantime (maybe selling ebay items) only if it will help your search. And answer truthfully during interviews about the gap.

7. No one wants to give me my first job. I don't think I will ever begin my career! Finding your first job can be one of the hardest things you will ever encounter in your career. Try to refine your resume and include as much as you can in the way of school-related experiences, volunteering, and soft skills. If possible, consider interning somewhere briefly to boost your employability. But keep at it. Consider taking a job far from your ideal too, as it could be a stepping stone to what you desire later.

8. I don't meet all the qualifications! I will never get a job. Having a negative attitude will kill your job search. Focus on what you do have, and be sure to highlight those areas. If you can educate yourself on other things they are wanting, then do it. But having a "can-do" attitude can go far!

9. I have applied everywhere, but no luck. It's hopeless. Again, banish that negative thinking. Widen your area of search in both geographical area and job type. This might help bring results.

10. Bad references/criminal record!! I am doomed! There are ways around these two problems. Being honest about the issues but not giving too much information is important. Try to find good references to offset the bad, and as for a criminal record try to find employment doing something unrelated. Eventually bad things can fade away, but in the meanwhile just deal with them honestly.
