What is the best way to cope with job loss ?

I have recently been fired (down sizing -- they called it right sizing .. )

anyways, I am not sure if I should start buying papers and sending my resume or take it easy for a month and play with my kids and cats!

I have my emergency fund which can last me four months...

I am pretty shell shocked about what happened it was not a straight forward down sizing.... it was protracted making it worse.

So any tips on coping with job loss? Start looking for work the day after or chill for while.

First off, don't kid yourself that you've got a safety cushion of 4 months. I once went through a two year redundancy programme with plenty of preparation and help from my company. I left with a good payoff and decided to take a six month break to spend with my family. Fatal. I lost all momentum and it eventually took 22 months before I landed another job.

Start your job search straight away. Every now and again, give yourself a day off as a reward but you really ought to treat your job search as if you were going to work. Keep a routine with tea breaks and a lunch hour; even dress for work if need be. Be positive and professional at all times. Keep a diary/schedule and plan your actions. Read around this site, there is lots of good advice to be had.

Good luck.

I wouldn't take a month off.... may be a few days off, then start searching... The longer you are out of work, the harder it gets to find a good job. Employers don't like to hire people who have been out of work for a long time. Once you get a job offer, you can always ask for a week or two before you start work & take a holiday.

your fonds can finish earlier than 4 month.. and then what do you do: no job, no money, nothing?

If I were you I'd take, like KA said, couple of day off and then I'll be back with all my forces to start find a new job opportunity. In the meantime tell your friends that you are looking for a job; you may never know what networking can bring you.
