Hello,

I am seeking advice regarding my current situation with respect to my future plans. I currently work for a public policy research firm, working on education and health research projects. I graduated with a B.A. in Economics a little over a year ago. Coming out of school, I didn't know exactly what I wanted to do, but decided to give the field of research a shot. After working here for a year and getting a sense of potential career paths, I'm pretty certain that public policy research isn't for me. I would like to switch fields or industries and begin working in finance (another field I considered out of college).

Here's where the issue comes in. I would like to apply to business schools in roughly a year or two. In my current position, I have worked hard to gain an unusual level of responsibility for someone in my position. I will soon become a project manager, managing a handful of research analysts. My fear is that if I switch careers at this point, my business school application will be much less strong for two reasons: that the experience I gain at my next job will be much less impressive (I will have to start from the bottom, so to speak), and that I will be unable to show on my application that I have clear goals, objectives and a career path.

So what should I do? Should I continue in my current position until I decide to go back to school, knowing that I ultimately want to move away from the field of public policy research? Or should I switch jobs and gain experience in the field of finance knowing that it may weaken my business school application?

Thank you very much in advance!

Since the two areas you are speaking of are related and not vastly different, I do not think you will have a lot of problems if you go ahead with the job and do the schooling later. The job you have might pay for part of your schooling, and you might also wind up doing something totally different from either of these options.
