I just started a new a/p job. My desk is covered with stacks and stacks of unpaid bills, some of them months old. There are copies of copies, and phone calls from vendors and constant interruptions. I have to chase people around to get signatures, when they know they have to do it in the first place. I am now going through the stacks having to look up each one to see what should be paid, etc. They never informed in the interview that they have not had a permanate person in this position for TWO YEARS! They have had temp after temp and people that they have hired that have not stayed more than a month or 2. I wanted to walk out the first day, but I need to pay rent! Now I have been here 2 weeks and hate it every day. I keep getting more work and projects to do. If I just leave I feel like it will keep me from getting another good job, since most people in this area know each other. What should I do?
Thanks! |

In my experience and knowing the mindset of most employers, here's what will probably happen:
You'll stay, work really hard, get everything all cleaned up, back in order, caught up, and they'll say they don't need you any longer, and they'll return to using temps until it's once again a mess beyond repair, and the process will repeat itself.
Yes, it is possible they'll be so impressed they'll triple your pay and give you a new Lexus as a bonus. But I wouldn't hold my breath.
Me? I'd start looking for something else and if that "something" should come along soon enough, I'd never mention this employer in a resume or on an application. It's too easy to be, oh, "creative" about a few weeks of time spent not-employed (the clear implication being that we're expected to spend each and every single day and week of our lives working somewhere....rat bastards....)
Until then, do indeed do everything you can to fix their mess if for no other reason than it's a challenge. Prove to yourself, if not them, that you can do it. It's your time and for me the old saying is still true: Anything worth doing is worth doing right.
Just file this under one of your future horror stories you get to tell others.... |

I hate to take a negative viewpoint, but I have to agree with Randy here. If the company has managed this so poorly without you, it seems like it's probably a systemic issue. Corporate culture and attitudes cannot easily be changed. I'd start looking as well, maybe hoping that at least you can get things smoothed out a bit for yourself in the interim.
I hope it works out for you - best of luck! |
