Free Career and Job Search Advice

I have been working at a well known company in Oregon for almost 7 years and I have been making good money. I recently got a new boss and at first we got along very well. Later on another higher level boss asked me some questions about her that I knew the answer would get her into trouble. I did not want to answer but I thought I had to. Now my boss is coming after me. I have been getting into a lot trouble for things that normally people don't get into trouble for and things that are not even normally noticed. I was 1 minute late once and I got a verbal warring. Yet there have been people coming in 15+ mins late and some how she doesn't seem to notice them. Not to long ago I make minor a mistake that was fixed and I got a written warning. Mind you that for the almost 7 years I worked there I never even got a verbal warning before this boss and normally a written warning is for really big mistakes. I asked a few people about it and they found it strange/harsh how big the punishments are vs how minor mistakes are. I have been told I should fight it but at this point I am not sure the job is worth all the stress of working under this new boss. I am thinking of going back to school and doing a career change after she has built enough of a case to fire me or just quiting, but some one told me it would be much easier to get a job if I already had one and with my work experience, I could possibly into a higher level. If I could some how collect unemployment, that would be great but I read you can not get it if they company says it was your fault. If anyone has any advice please let me know.

Yes, you cannot get unemployment if you are unemployed thru circumstances that are your own fault. And it sounds like maybe they are setting you up to fire you and then say it was your own fault so you can't get unemployment. If you are seriously interested in the idea of going back to school, I think it might be for your own good. If you can tough it out at this job, then that is great. But something tells me that they are going to give you a hard time about schooling, so you might be better off with a better job in a different place no matter what.

Sounds like it's time to dust of the resume and find something new or go back to school.

Does the company have an HR department? It might be worth talking to HR and using them as a mediator to address some of the concerns you have about your boss.

Remember - never accuse your boss of anything ("Why do you give me a letter when I'm 1 minute late?"), but frame your questions as "I have noticed that when I'm one minute late I get a letter of reprimand. Is that accurate?". Always, always, always give your boss a chance to save face or correct your impression.

Please go back to the person you gave all the information to about your current boss and explain what is going on and how you didn't want to tell on her/him but you love your job and felt you had to. If the company's worth staying at, that person should help you. Otherwise, look for another job and be prepared to be fired soon. If you are fired, be sure to file an unemployment claim and work it out there. See my site on how to do this properly.

Walkman and botweety both gave you good advice. If you are valuable to the company, you sould be able to get a third party involved as a mediator and find an outcome to this problem. If that means your boss getting reprimanded, so be it. I am lucky enough to have a union atmosphere in whic I work, and I just had to do something similar to this with my own boss. It's a shame, but at the same time you are not their doormat and you deserve to be treated equally with other people.
