I'm an American living in Japan currently and will be moving back to the U.S. around the middle of September and have started looking for a job. I know in a cover letter, you usually say that you will be making contact with the company you're looking to work for to set up an interview, but in my case, it's impossible, at least until September. How should I go about handling this in a cover letter?
thanks, any advice would be appreciated. |

You might let them know your current situation [i.e. that you are abroad and will be coming home] but not in too much detail in a short parargraph. What you could do, since you cannot be there in person for aninterview, is start with the basics of a phone interview or do teleconferencing via the internet in the initial interview phases at a time that is agreeable to both of you. This could work, and if you do not have the necessary equipment to do this I would investigate borrowing it or buying some, as it would be a big step towards helping you get a job.

thanks for the advice. I hate the phone, even in general, I can't imagine how stresssful it would on the phone, but that seems to be the way to go.
Do you think I should I mention to them in the interview about a phone interview and then tell them that I'll contact them? or should I mention it and wait for them to contact me?
thanks |

Often times what will happen is an initial contact and then they will set up an interview, not just surprise you with one. That way you won't be nervous and such.
