I have a couple job opportunities that have come up on my radar that are about 20-25 grand more than what I am making now (they called me!). Trouble is they are about 80 miles away (mostly highway driving). My current job isn't bad but is getting a bit boring. They say they are working on making changes that may move me to a better position, but I've been hearing that talk for years.

Any advice? I've considered the gas prices/tolls/parking differences and the increase will definitely cover that. I'm not crazy about being the car 2 hours every day though. One company has already told me they do not allow telecommuting - which would be a plus if they would offer it.

Do I go for the $$$ or stay put and hope my current employer can make good on their promises for once.

80 miles one way equals about 3 hours driving, plus 8 working, and you're at 11 hours a day. If you have no life at all, nothing else at all that interests you, no family, no personal things like music, sports, fishing, gatting laid...then I guess this ain't a big deal.

Personally I want nothing to do with any occupation that keeps me away from home one minute more than is absolutely necessary....

And you've said they've only "offered" you this much. Chances are better than even that if you commit to this new job, you'll find that what they really mean is that you'll make that much...eventually, but not starting out. Even so....?

If you take a deep breath and just step away from it all for a bit you'll find that the universe has a rather unique way of guiding you in the direction that's right for you.....

I don't know how satisfied you are with your current living situation. I would try the drive, and the higher salary on for size. You could always wind up moving closer to this job after a month or two if you decide that you really like it there. I would be very careful as to how you quit the first job though, just in case you decide that you do not like the new job and want to try to get the old one back. Everyone has the right to try to better themselves and make a change, so I say go for it!
