To help people who are elderly, you do not need to be a part of an organized group. Find a retirement center or a senior center (they are called different things in different countries) and ask the director if there is anyone there who doesn't have family come and visit. You could be that person's helper and regular visitor.
If you prefer to work with more than one person, read, sing or play music to a group of elderly people.
No matter what you choose, doing anything is certainly better than nothing.
