This is something that I haven't been able to get a definitive answer on: I'm looking to relocate to a different area, and hence am looking for jobs in that area. Do I need to mention in my cover letter that I am looking to relocate, or will they get that idea? I mean, they're not going to assume I'm going to make a 2-hours-one-way commute every day, right? Or look at my address and say "that idiot, applying for a job with us, doesn't she know we're nowhere near where she lives?"

I've tried addressing that in my cover letter but I've not yet found a good way. The best I've come up with is something like "I will be moving to the area upon finding employment" but that sounds more like "I need a job there and I guess your company will do" than "I want to work for you and I'm willing to relocate to do so."

And is there any way to bring up--in an interview perhaps, or even sooner?--that the only reason I'm leaving my current job is because I want to relocate? I'm worried about looking like a job hopper, when really the only reason is that I just need to live somewhere else, otherwise I'd stick around with my current company.

Put in your resumes and cover letters, and leave out the part about relocation. That should be a topic addressed during an interview. Then, you can better express yourself and not sound too needy. Your skills should be the focus of your resume/cover letters, not your relocation needs.

I would agree...Mentioning relocation criteria leaves a wrong impression....They might not accept you for not being flexible in terms of location... Sad
