Hey groupies, looking for some help here. Here’s my problem, I have a degree in Business, but am not a recent college grad. I graduated in 2006 and took time off have my daughter. I’ve been looking for work in my field since then and I’m still looking for that first job. Now I’m starting to wonder if I should just change careers or take up the first job offered. Any ideas?

Have you tried nonprofits? While they don’t actually make a profit, they do need accountants or business people to help manage the finances. Try the temp agencies that specialize in office work. If you’re still looking for that first job using the business degree you should look to take anything related to your degree or field.

If you have really been looking for a year and are still looking for that first job, I would say lower your sites. Try for something related even if its experience in an office environment, at least its experience which can be used later on. Try getting a job as a bank teller or insurance adjuster. If you really have to, grab a job at a warehouse just to make enough to support yourself while searching.

Yes, I would set your sights lower for now. The reality these days is that there are far more college grads still looking for their first job than there are jobs needing college degrees.

Another option, if you can do it, is to try for a graduate degree like an MA/MS in Business or Accounting or some related field. Then you can use that to get into an internship. I’m seeing so many college grads still looking for that first job and not having a clue what the work is like. While years ago getting an internship wasn’t all that big a deal, today it seems to be a way to get your foot in the door.

I don’t know how possible this is for you, but if you are still looking for that first job, and your daughter is still young, I’d say move to somewhere that you can get better chances at working in your field. You might be in an area where your skills are overused or there’s a glut of people doing what you can do. That’s one reason I moved from NYC to Miami. I couldn’t find anything decent up north so I went to where the work is.
