I mean, my brother in-law found a job as a construction worker using this job search engine, but I'm having such a hard time looking for a job by conventional means, should I try it out? My wife is killing me because I'm so broke lately.

Thanks for the help. Very Happy Embarassed

I've never found the internet to help at all, in the UK I had tons of work through job agencies, I moved to the states and have been trying to use the net to find work for over a year now and have only gotten one call back.

The net is useless for job seekers.

The way you use the net is one of the problems. If you search for job titles, you'll just get pages of job titles of various ages, or nothing.

There are a few other things you can do:

1. Search job skills, and qualifications, not job titles. That way you get all the jobs related to your skill sets and qualifications.

2. Search locations. That's a quick way of finding anything local, and saves wading through big city searches.

3. Hunt around for the best sites you can find, that give you what you want. That can take a while, particularly in the UK, where there are lots of sites but less information on them, in some cases.

gromancarlin:

The problem with the conventional means is they're way too slow. Everybody else has asked or applied before you have. On the net you can find, check out and apply for a job in a few minutes, the old way it takes days or weeks.

The other problem is that it's also the most common way to apply for jobs these days. Hardly anyone does hard copy applications any more. You need to pin down not only who has the jobs, but who's doing the recruiting for those jobs. You can contact them about the jobs you find, and also see what they can do for you about finding work for you.

Hound.com

Hound.com has a good reputation, despite the amount of spam posted on this site about it, but we can't endorse it or vouch for its services as being any better than others like Monster, etc. It doesn't use recruiters, but it does link direct to employers' web sites.

I'm actually doing a review of this site at the moment, and I do have a few reservations about the way it's organized. Try it, but you can also check out others like Monster, if you don't like Hound.

So after a little reading about in the interwebs I came across this site called 100k Crossing. I'm guessing the site is for more executive type positions or it for mid-range jobs? At this point I'm pretty desperate so I guess I'll try anything. What I'm looking for is a simple accounting job. Nothing to big, but nothing anyone could do.[/url]

Job engines do work. I found a job using www.careerify.ca
They are really new and have some exciting jobs up there. It is limited however - but more jobs are being posted everyday

Jobserve.co.uk is a site that I always get a job from.

I don't know about construction jobs but there must be some search engine for them. There is always the construction magazines in your area- these must definitely have jobs in them.

Alternatively you could cold call, send your CV, visit and speak to the manager of all the construction firms in the yellow pages.

Make sure you have a decent CV before you do all this cause otherwise you might lose an opportunity that you shuld have got.

I'm not sure about constrution specifi job sites but as a recruitment consultant and someone looking for work I've always find job serve and monster very good.

Jobsite is also a good place to have your CV saved as any recruitment consulatncy worth their salt ends to have access to jobsites candidaate database.

So from an advert side of things I'd say look on jobserve and monster as a back up, if you want companies and consultancies to contact you stick your CV up on Jobsite.
