Hello,
I'm looking for some advice.

I'm 19 years old and in my first year of university. I study French and Japanese. I spent three months in France working at a youth hostel and found it hard at the beginning, however I enjoyed it. I've applied for another placement for this summer.

The reason I chose Japanese, though, is because I wanted to work in Japan. However, reading stories of people's experiences, it seems rather unlikely that I'd get a good job there. I am planning on taking a TEFL course in my second year but I'm very aware that the teaching jobs in Japan are now way too competitive, even with my youth behind me.

I'm getting on rather well with the Japanese language and know a fair amount of Japanese culture. My previous work experience is that in the hospitality industry and office work.

I am hoping to either become a teacher or interpreter, however the latter's looking extremely slim as I only speak two languages fluently (well, one almost fluently) and have been studying the other for three months.

It seems to me that if I worked in France, I could probably move out of the hospitality sector once I graduate and pursue the teaching job I want. In Japan, although I like the idea of the country more, it's going to be a lot harder.

In your opinion, which would be a better choice for me? Obviously there are many other factors in play, but I'm hoping someone can point me in a good direction. Smile

Thanks!

If you really want to be a teacher in Japan, then be a teacher in Japan. I think patience is the biggest issue here. In time you will get better as you become more familiar with the language also, something you may not be considering. What I Would do is plan on being a teacher and continuing to study and improve, with the hopes of moving into being an interpreter within a couple years after that.
