Free Career and Job Search Advice

Hi I'm from the USA and about a year ago I quit my job as a underpaid Project Manager to go to work for another company that paid more for me to be a draftman (which is what I was before becoming a Project Manager) but right after I left this company I have been battling with myself on if it was the correct choice. Yeah the money was better but the work conditions and people were not as good as before. I was told by this employer that I would be promoted to a managerial position after a short time (about 6 months) of being there but that never happened. So I started looking for something else. I have found another job with even better pay then the one I just left, however I am still as a draftsman and I am still battling with myself over leaving the first employer. I have since spoke with them about possibly going back to work for them and they agreed to hire me back but the problem I'm having now is a money issue. They have agreed to pay me more then what I made when I worked there the first time but it still doesn't match what I am making now. If I go back to them, which I really want to, I will lose money but I will probably feel at ease about being back there. Please help with some kind of advise on what should I do.[/list][/code]

I know this may sound corny, but what is your heart telling you to do? To me, it sounds like you prefer the job you left. While making more money is nice, it doesn't take the place of enjoying what you do or who you work with.

Try to negotiate as high a salary as possible with the first employer. If what they offer you & going back makes you happy, then do it. If not, keep looking for a project manager job elsewhere.

I would also recommend doing the job that you enjoy. If that job is the first job, then go back to the job. As the old saying goes money cannot buy happiness, and as much as you may enjoy the extra money, it sounds like you have more potential to advance in your career in your old job, and you also were operating in a fairly stress free environment. It takes a lot of courage to go back to a job that you previously quit, but I think your coworkers will admire the decision, and understand that you wanted to try something new, it didn't work out, and now you are back where you are happy.
