Here are my job search commandments

Know what you want

This is the yardstick you’ll measure all opportunities against. It’s a list of what you are looking for and why, from your next position. If you don’t know why you are looking you will struggle to find it. So decide clearly what you are looking for and get it down on paper. Today.

Your time is precious
Lack of time is the number one excuse for not engaging in a job search in the first place. Most likely you will have to juggle your job search around your other commitments. You need to know how much time you can allot and when. From now on this is your sacred time, guard it.

Use your network
You know what they say, its not what you know, its who you know. Your personal network of contacts can be a rich source of useful information for your job search, whether its to conduct an informational interview or to tap them up for details of an unadvertised position. Learn how to make the most of it.

Make the most of job search methods
The internet, newspapers and trade journals will help you get a feel for just what is out there in the marketplace. Use them.

Learn how to deal with recruitment consultants
You are probably going to have to deal with them whether you like it or not. Learn how to make it work for you.

Presentation matters
It is not really about what you can do. It’s about what the employer believes you can do. Effective presentation is crucial throughout the process.

You must sell yourself
No, that doesn’t mean lie! Just understand that in this scenario, the employer is the buyer, and you have to show them that you are the candidate they should choose. Identify what employers are looking for from you. Give it to them.

Interviewing is a skill You can learn to give a great interview. You must learn to give a great interview.

Ditch the lovingangel@gmail.com. Now is the time to professionalise yourself, use your proper name or professional name.

Add your email address to your CV or resume.

How many times do I see this omission?


Register on online job sites.

There are many: seek.com, monster.com, and also check out your local newspaper online listings.

There can be E-mail autoresponders will useful not only to employers, but also those who searches for work.
For example, while you are on interview, the autoresponder will send the message on your absence at present but as soon as you appear then will communicate.
It will show that you are well informed and using the newest technical achievements.

Mass Mailings. You have to get out ahead of the crowd and get your resume in front of decision makers.
Job agencies aren't a bad idea, but employers don't need this 'middle-man' any longer. Networking and word of mouth? Unless you have prior associates sitting in high places then networking groups will be little more than therapy sessions. So, mass mailings? Here, in the US, the census bureau tracks industries by SIC (now replaced with NAICS) codes. Visit (http://www.census.gov/econ/index.html) and type in the industry in the search field. Armed with these codes you can identify the telephone numbers and addresses of companies you want to target via www.hoovers.com. You are limited to how much information Hoovers will provide you at home, so if you are in NYC visit the Science, Industry, and Business Library (http://www.nypl.org/locations/sibl). There is SO MUCH free access to stuff, you will compile a list very quickly. Take your NAICS codes, plug them into Hoover's 'Industry' tab and you will have a taste of what you've discovered. You take those telephone numbers and you call and say, "Hi, can I speak the the manager of ...." Right before you get transfered, ask for his/her name... and there's your contact. Get as many names as you can because the next step is sending the RIGHT RESUME to as many companies you physically can and play the numbers. A word about the resume you choose to send... A 5 pg CV or some chronological obituary will be quickly garbaged. The right resume is a topic for another thread. This process is a bit labor intensive, but the people who receive your marketing documents (resume/cover letter)will be impressed to say the least... as long as you have the RIGHT documents to send. A value oriented/quantifiable-accomplishment filled resume is the only option. There's an old saying, "nothing comes easy. You have to work at it in order to get what you want"... or something like that... I hope this helps. If you're not in the US, I am sure your governments track industries in a similar fashion. Hoover's, Inc. is a business research company that has provided information on U.S. and foreign companies and industries since 1990 so it may still come in handy with a little more strategizing. Welcome to the hidden job market.

A person can search for jobs by registering on jobs websites and you can post your resume on these websites. Looking for jobs online is the most cost efficient way and a person can save lot of time. Make a good resume that is unique and send that resume to people who are hiring.

Don't just update your resume, but tailor fit it to the job that you're vying for. It will actually increase your chances of getting hired than the generic ones.
