I live in MA and after being laid off two summers ago, I had to file for unemployment benefits.
Its not that hard (at least in MA). From what i remember, you have to wait a week from when you got "involuntarily" dismissed from your job then you are allowed to file. Its very easy to file. you can do it online on via phone.
The only "gotcha" is: you have to wait till you burn through your severence before they will send you any money.
Its just enough money to keep you afloat until you find other work. Had to cancel my NetFlix, Gym Membership, Cable and other "luxuries" too |

What are the imporant issues when Filing for Unemployment.
Are you in the USA first of all? Well back when I was unemployed and applied for unemployment, we had to actually walk into the unemployment office and feel stupid that we were between jobs. Then we had to fill out some lengthy papers. Then we had to come back later for some unemployment professional to sit us all down and tell us how we were supposed to fill out resumes and job application forms, etc., and this was in front of others so the others all knew we were out of work. We had to do this to get any benefits. After the second time of doing this, I swore that I would never ever again go to the unemployment office as it was humiliating and I did not need that again.
A person does need to have so many months of work or so many hours in the past year or so to be allowed to receive benefits.
I think now all one has to do is CALL the Unemployment office and file on the phone, then they set up an appointment with you fortunately on the phone. They then ask you questions like why were you let go, did you quit (oh by the way do NOT say you quit, you were fired remember?). Make sure you have a good reason if you DID quit. And it better be a good reason as well. Be sure you are healthy and willing and able to work. Be sure your car works. Be sure if your car works that you don't tell them that.
ONLY ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THEY ASK YOU. Do NOT provide them more info then they request.
Do I have to sell off any assest prior to getting by benefits, do I need to claim the amounts I have in my bank account ? |
NOT if you don't tell anyone you have any assets. By the way, you don't have to sell off any assets to get unemployment. You can be rich and have tons of money in the bank and yes, you can own a house and a car, and still get unemployment benefits. You may have received a large salary or a not so large a salary and still get it.
If your last employer says you shouldn't get it, you better sure come up with some good reason to receive it. Some may challenge it and say you can't get it, as they don't want to spend their money on you.
FILE THE FORMS RIGHT AWAY, the FIRST WEEK you are unemployed!! Do NOT DELAY THIS!! As you do NOT get paid until you apply with them!!
I hope this helps. As to monies for the severence pay, I am not sure on that. You may have to wait until that pay is over.
Each state may be different on the rules. Remember it's been awhile since I did this. My friends have done this more recently and all they had to do was call in every week and confirm that YES, they looked for work. When before we had to send in an envelope and PAY for the STAMP ourselves to send it into unemployment.
A very simple question and answer card to send always on Sundays by a certain time.
Did you DO any work this week? Your answer is "NO"
Did you LOOK for any work this week? Your answer is "YES"
Did you turn down any offer of work this week? Your answer is "NO"
If you ever turn down work, they sure better not find out about it, as you will LOSE your Unemployment Benefits.
Do NOT apply for ANY job you are not able or willing to accept right away!
You absolutely must follow all their rules to the letter!
Then you just sent it in the mail.
It's a bit easier now as now people just CALL and WAIT to get through to their telephone and leave a message on some machine.
(START EARLY SUNDAY AS IT TAKES AWHILE I HEARD TO GET THROUGH)
What happens if some employer says you don't get the unemployment benefits?
YOU DISAGREE WITH THEM!! YOU DEFEND YOURSELF!! THINK LIKE A LAWYER WOULD OR GET ONE!
If that doesn't work and you are asked to APPEAL, then you APPEAL their decision.
If Unemployment says you can't get unemployment benefits, what's your answer then?
YOU APPEAL THEIR DECISION!!
If you get turned down that time, what do you do? YOU KEEP TRYING TO GET IT!! YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT!! So does your family's life!
Unless of course you were lucky to already find work, then you may not need Unemployment benefits.
What if you received a PART TIME JOB?? TURN THAT IN AS WELL!
Then they will just take out the amount you earned from your pay and then you have to turn in your pay each week to them.
KEEP APPEALING UNTIL YOU WIN!! |
