I was recently fired from my job for incorrectly documenting an employees performance. I was following the direction from my manager whose goal was to eventually eliminate the employee. I will admit that I knew what I was doing was wrong, but afraid to confront my manager about it. When the incorrect data came into question I knew I was going to take the fall and offered to resign. My manager refused to accept my resignation stating that the issue was not that serious. Then, 2 days later, he fired me for violating company policy.
I have started applying for jobs and EVERY online application asks if I have ever been fired before.
My questions are as follows:
1. If I check the box that says "YES" I have been fired, will the employers online system automatically disqualify me?
2. How can I explain this to potential employers without looking like a criminal for violating company policy or looking like a whimp for not confronting my boss for requesting the unethical actions?
3. My biggest problem: I applied for a job and did not tell them I was fired. I told them I resigned. After going through a couple interviews (and feeling pretty confident), I was informed that they use a service to conduct a detailed investigation of my background. Is it likely that this discrepancy (fired vs. resigned) will show up? If so, will I have the option to explain or automatically be eliminated from consideration?
I am feeling extremely discouraged. How does anyone find a job after being fired?
Thank you in advance for any advice. |
