i have been with my current employer for about 4 months and i am yet to recieve any kind of increase to my salary.

i have been toying with the idea of asking my manager out straight if i can have some sort of raise but i am worried of a negative response.

after writing this post i have thought maybe it would be better to ask what the company's policy is regarding increases, then depending on the response, ask. would this be better?

thanks!

Ouch, this is a sensitive situation Smile)
I say this because, well, it depends on the relationship you have with your boss. You should definitely ask for those details about the policy, but if its a small business and you have a close relationship with your boss (that is he trusts you and chooses you to do some jobs instead of others), I suppose you can....wait....a straight question wouldn't be the answer...

You can just allude the idea...like, if he tells you in a situation "Good work, Mike, you did a great job!", you can give an answer like @Does this mean that I deserve a raise?@...or something like this...

But it all depends on the personality your boss has and his age....

You've only been there four months so don't ask yet for fear of being seen as pushy. I think you have the right idea in enquiring politely about the salary policy or when the appraisals are due to take place.

Hi there,

You have to be at least one year old in a company to be able to ask for a raise. It is assumed that when you got the job they told you the conditions and you accepted them. Unless you have done something extraordinary in that company, there is no reason to motivate your attempt.

Bosses really hate it when employees get pushy. And lilo, I don't think you can become "pals" with your boss in just 4 months!

It really depends if you deserve a pay rise or if you are underpaid. If so, then ask for a meeting to discuss.

My opinin is to first ask for all the details in your company regarding salary increases....conditions, obligations from both parts. Then, if there are doors which can be opened, I would say a direct confrontation with the boss wouldn't necessary be the wisest choice. How about showing yourself worthy of a salary increase? I don't know exactly what your position in that company is, but who knows, maybe you can actually do something..."extraordinary".

This is a very touch subject. I definitely wouldn't ask about a salary increase yet though. Your suggestion about enquiring about their policy in this matter makes a lot more sense. However, I'm wondering if you got an employee handbook when you started working there? If so, then the information that you need should be in there. If you didn't receive an employee handbook you can always use this as an inroad to the salary issue. Ask them for an employee handbook. If they ask you why you want one tell them you wanted to know about their policy for raises. If they hand you the handbook read it then ask. Either way it's a win-win situation.
