As of 1st October it is now illegal to discriminate against anyone in the UK on the grounds of age. There is a factsheet here: http://www.agepositive.gov.uk/complogos/DTI%20Factsheet_Overview.pdf#search=%22new%20age%20legislation%22
that explains everything. It contains links to the relevant legislation.

This is quite an emotive issue and one wonders whether it is in fact enforcable in practice. It will be very difficult to prove that age was a mitigating factor in either your dismissal or your failure to land a job but this now opens up some new opportunities for UK CV writers. Technically, it is now no longer necessary to include either your age or date of birth on your CV. I would be inclined not to in future as it is irrelevant. Employers will have to review you on experience only. If a prospective employer asks for it you will now have the upper hand - your answer should now be "Why?" and they will have to justify why. If they insist, you should point them at the legislation.

Many points for discussion.
