Hi,

I have a bit of a dilemma with this one. The person who will be receiving my cover letter/resume has the first name "Lee". I have no idea if this would be a woman or a man and although I did try to research the name, I have been unable to find out the gender. How could I possible address the cover letter? Obviously, I want to use the last name but how do I genderfy (just made up that word) Smile it?

Thanks,
Kathryn

I just should add that this person is in Human Resources and this is for a public library. I wouldn't know who or how to contact anyone to ask this question.

Why don't you try "Dear Hiring Manager" if you can't tell the gender? I suggest using that or "Dear Sir/Madam"...but I find the first formula better and more appropriate.

It might be possible to use their entire name? Such as "Dear Lee [TheirLastName]"

Yes, of course, she can use their entire name as well. But I find the option with "dear Hirimg Manager" more formal...so if you'd need that, use that. For instance, in my country, we do not address anybody with their name...we use their status instead.

Thanks for all of your responses Smile In North America, I've been told by many experts that it is always best to use the name whenever possible...it personalizes it more. I was also told that even if there isn't a name available, to try and research to find the name of the person who will be reviewing resumes and cover letters. That's just what I've been told (in classes and the like). I like the suggestion of going with the full name and will try that Smile

Thanks again!!!

Sorry if this isn't the appropriate forum but I just wanted to tell everyone that I got a job!!! I'll be working at one of the branches of the Calgary Public Library starting June 11 and there's lots of room for advancement in this position...I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who gave advice over a few of the problems I encountered over this whole process!!!

Thanks Smile
