| It's Christmas time soon. Someone has already suggested taking up a collection for buying something for the boss. I'm wondering if this is even appropriate. It's not that I dislike the boss but I already have a lot of people on my list to shop for. I know that all I have to do is give some money here but I really am trying to budget my gift purchases this year. Is there a polite way to not give toward this gift? Thanks! |

A polite way? Ummm....however polite you will be I'm afraid the move won't be considered polite at all sorry to state this....I'm thinking that by not adding your share, your co-workers will pay more for whatever they have in mind. Not nice (I'm seeing this throught their eyes). And even if the got something else, more cheap, they will still pay more
Anyway.....you can just motivate you're in a financial disgrace these days and you have already did the shoppings for christmas for your family and now you're in....debt you already borrowed money from your friends.
Things like that.
But my suggestion is to offer as little as you can (and you find decent) and motivate you have not more than that.
Think of this collection as an advantage...if it didn't exist, you would have probably had to buy a gift for your boss yourself... |

| You'll be considered a cheapscake if you don't put some cash for the boss's presents.I considere that some bucks for your boss is something common and a polite way to show him that you like him.If you don't put money,your office mates will not understand you and maybe they will "kick you out" of the group. |

...place an amount of money there. No matter how small...I mean it matters but you can motivate your reasons. It's better than not contributing with anything Your mates will definitely eat you our with the first occasion. |

| I believe that is best for you to choose to put some money there for your boos's present than to ruin some colaboration relation between you and your work mates.If you risk to loose them for no more than 100$ then you'll be "alone" at work with no one to talk to. |

Wow, I never even thought of that. That sort of thing doesn't happen in my company.
I would hate that sort of thing. It's like you're being forced to do something, and if you don't (for whatever reason), it's going to be remembered by your co-workers.
To really prevent this sort of embarassment, the people wanting to get the boss some type of gift should set up some type of "anonymous donation", with a few trusted people in charge of the collection. This would prevent placing people on the spot and allow those that don't wish to participate an option to stay out of it. The gift could be presented as "some of us wanted to" instead of "we wanted to".
What was the end result? Have you made a decision yet? |
