hello, i live in US i want to start a website. I have 2 ideas but i need help. need to know if #1 i need to ask permission. what kind of permits are needed. the first one is kind of like CRAIGSLIST. do i need to ask them permission? Can they sue me for taking or copying their idea? The second site is a CHAT line. how hard is it to start this? can i really make money on this? and the last important thing is how do i generate traffic? Done extensive research on internet and can't find answers to my questions. I do have a webdesigner, but if you are a web designer i may be willing to take your offer. please help.

For question #1, it depends how closely you want to copy their idea. You can't make an exact copy of it, but you are allowed to have similar content/ideas. The only reason you would have to ask their permission is if they have a trademark on the type of site, which I don't think they do, so you should be ok there. I don't have much experience with chat lines so I can't really respond to #2. The only suggestion I would make to you is it is really hard to make a successful copycat site. Unless you give visitors a great reason to visit your site rather than the competitors, they are just going to continue to go to the established competitor. You will have a lot more success if you come up with an original idea in a niche market, and then have others try to copy you. Best of luck!

thanks jeter, my idea for a website is like craigs list but with modifications, i will offer 3 new features that i don't think anyone offers at this time, at least not all together. Also my prices will be much less than theirs. Is there restrictions as to pricing? I have a webdesigner working on my site right now, he tells me that once he's done with my site i should be able to launch right away. Is this so? Do i need to contact any agency and establish myself as a business? What fees do i need to pay? The designer says he delivers and i start no licenses or fees other than to promote, Is this so? or is he pulling my leg to get my business?

I agree with Tom, it is much better to come up with an original idea. Also, search engines like Google do not like duplicated content!

As for your web designer, it really depends on what you are paying him for. Is it just to publish your website or does it include maintenance for say a year or so?

From all the research I have done about hosting packages and integral tools, I found that there are a lot of hosting companies that do nothing and others that deliver everything you need in one place.

Check out all of your options before settling on anything. All of the buzz right now in web-dom is building a site where your passion or knowledge of a topic entice visitors to come back again and again. It's all about content.

What really makes a difference, though, is finding a web host that submits your web pages for you, checks them for errors, broken links, keyword strength and shows you when your pages are indexed. That's HUGE.

Check out the two links below for more information on the site I use. My first site started making money within 4 months of it going live. My second site is only 7 days old, so I'm still building content.

I can say for sure that craiglist don't have copyright for the site type... there are a lot of similar sites out there, just not as well-known. The same thing stays for the second idea.

Now to answer your second question... to drive trafic to your site it's not easy an all - there is an all industry related tot his (SEM and SEO - search engine marketing and search engine optimization). I can say only one thing - competition is so high all and over that you should spend much efforts to make site profitable.

Kharlos, did you try to research other competitors? What is amount of them?

And last - you can try any freelance site where professionals all over the world will provide you with suggestions and do all you require. Try for example, http://www.scriptlance.com/
