|
|
Hi all,
I have spent most of my working life so far in unskilled office jobs. I am at the stage where I want to learn a new skill - get qualifications and hopefully get a decent job at the end of it. I am considering a part time web design course as I am interested in the internet, have creative capabilities and enjoy designing and managing new concepts.
The missing link is the in depth prgramming knowledge. So in that sense, it seems like a good idea.
My question is, if ur still reading, is do you think this is a prosperous field to get into/ Is there too much competition on and offline and are qualifications necessary?
Are there any designers out there that can share experiences? Is there anyone out there that is persuing a similiar career? |

Well, let me answer some of your questions
- web designing is requested all over the world, thus being one of the ost prosperous fields
- you don't necessarily need to have qualifications, but you must compensate that lack with your skills and with your experience (I'm saying it's not like you're gonna get a job in the first months after you have started the web design course)
- however, qualifications are good. And portofolios as well
- the competition is way bigger than you might imagine ( I hope this won't mean you give up to your dream)
- you have to build up a style of yourself, one by which possible clients will recognize your works
- the market is open for beginners as well. There are a lot of companies which don't want to spend too much money in order to have a professional site done, and will accept beginners to work for them.
Good luck! |

|
|
At present there are zillions of web designers, some good, some not so good. Before contemplating a career, one of the aspects I would consider is what is the likelihood of web designers becoming structurally unemployed.
By this I mean that there is an increasing number of software applications that now generate sites within minutes. For example, I have an application on my site that will generate 100 fully specified pages in six or 10 seconds and I can have them downloaded to the web in minutes. I use a software program to do my own web work.
If you take on web design, you should consider whether web designers will fade out in the next few years and if so, what do you have as a backup plan.
Good luck. |

I can give you some advice.
You are not a designer if you can throw up some crappy html onto the internet.
So, no, you shouldn't do this, Geocites will better your best efforts, and that stuff is free.
The internet has enough pollution as it is.
Stick to digging holes for a living. |

| I kinda agree to the two people above my answer.....when it comes to art, you should have a natural background, because it is taste and skills which make the difference in this field. Sure....you can lean it....but if you learn it, you take something as it is and you give something as you have seen done before. Do you know what I mean? You need to have it in your blood to become a successfull designer. The Internet is full of bad looking sites, not to mention supports. |

Also, look at Robin's links.
These are examples of crap web work, and a good reason why you can safely dismiss totally his advice.
Robin, I suggest you stop using your software right away, it is not enhancing what you do, it is degrading it.
'Creating 1000000 pages per second using this freeware' isn't the way to go for a good web presense.
So yes, there are jobs for good web designers, and always will be.
No you won't be one.
But you can learn to code!
Go for that:) |
