|

I'm 31 and just finally finishing my first bachelors degree --I think I've decided that I want to start on an ADDITIONAL 2nd bachelors in Fashion Merchandising -I'm wondering if 1. it is stupid to pursue a 2nd bachelors instead of a masters 2. there are certain fields (fashion merchanding) that are more difficult to enter a bit older (35ish) -I do have 5 years experience managing an accessories store -my first degree is in Communication
-thank you |

It's not stupid at all, especially that your first degree is in Communication (Communication degrees act like "helpers" to any other degree because they are strongly related to human resources). In fact, I think the combination Communication - Fashion will be perfect for your future. So what if you're 31? This doesn't matter and if you are good, it doesn't even matter in the fashion field.
About the master.....whay not have them both? I, for example, am currently in master courses, on Saturday and Sunday.
Good luck! |

| ank06 -thank you so much for responding -I'm wondering are you in either the fashion or communication fields or have either of these degrees? I'd love to hear first hand experience of what it's like to use these degrees -either way -I really appreciate your support -it's great to know my ideas don't sound ridiculous |

I'm gonna answer this as well. I'm working with a local newspaper and the hiring office has had some encounters of dituations like yourself's. Last week we hired one girl who finished a design profile college and currently has master courses in Communication and she has been hired on the post of editor. She takes care of the pashion and design are in our magazine.
I don't know if this is what you are actually looking for as a job, I'm just saying these two profiles can be merged in a nice and productive way. |

memam,
I'm currently having master courses in Science of Communication and Language. I have finished a languages college last year and this year I intend to apply for a place in a Public Relations and Advertising university, because I believe that these profiles mix just fine. The way I am going to use them? I will probably work in an advertising company. This is my goal. |

It's what a degree will allow you to do that is important, not how many of them you have. If your second degree complements the first and will give you additional leverage in a job you want, then it's better to do that than worry about getting a Masters because it's a higher level.
At 31, you can do a Masters any time within the next 20 years. Ask yourself, what will a Masters now get me that the second degree won't? It's all a matter of utility ... chose the option that better meets your immediate and long term needs. |

I totally agree with Robin here, You can have master courses later without any problem. It's important to choose a complementary profile which will mix well with your first one. I'd go for that fashion profile college or whatever that is and then see what master I can get, one which will develop both first profiles.
It's true that there are contries in which the natural course of things is high-chool, college, master, but things have started to move even in those places and people first think of acknowledging things which are useful than of gathering higher degrees. |

My major is "Applied English", now I study for another degree"International Business" on Saturday and Sunday. The reason I go to study is I want to learn some basic knowledge about business & trade.
"Applied English" department in Taiwan is mainly about English teaching and business English; if you want to be more profesional in business, most people will choose to be a"double major", study 2 major at the same time.
But I didn't do that.
I study my second bachelor degree after I graduate from school. In other words, I work in Monday thru Friday, study on the weekend.
Another reason is, most larger companies in Taiwan (AUO,BENQ,FOXCONN)prefer to hire business background candidates to do export/international marketing jobs. |

Having a second degree just means that there will be more options open to you. You might decide that if one field is boring to you, there's something better in the other. Also, it looks good that you are dedicated enough to seek two degrees.
I don't think that you are too old. It might work to your advantage if you are seeking out an entry-level position. You have been in the workplace and know what employers sekk, plus you will be a bit more settled and mature in behavior. You would be less of a risk to them, so to speak.
This article refers to attending graduate school but might give you some insight abou more schooling in general:
