I need help! I haven't had to write a resume in several years. I want to submit a resume for a promotion with in the company I already work for. I will have to compete with many individuals whom may or may not have more qualifications than I do. The job posting closes 3-21.
What format is the best for applying in a corporate salary position from a hourly plant position?
When writing a resume, does it still need to be no longer than one page? Should my previous employment be more detailed to show my experiences that the 'job post' states?
The internal job application has a section to list related experience. Would a cover letter still be a must?
I appreciate any help that can be provided. I have to move quick on this or the opportunity may be lost. |

The cover letter is a MUST MUST in my opinion, especially in this case. I mean you can build up your resume (don't worry about you having not had built a resume for so long, there are various sources for you to inspire yourself from), but if it isn't backed up by a strong cover letter, it can become useless. And trust me...all the others competing will have a cover letter for sure.
No one sais your resume should only have one page. If you don't jump over two pages, it is acceptable. I mean what if you have usefull things to list in there?
And listen...moving up inside a company is more about the way you talk and act and...WORK... than about resumes. However, the latter ARE important.
If you have problems with building up your resume, try some formats, you'll find on this site. When you have it done, post it around here, on the forum, and we'll have a look at both your resume and your cover letter and tell you what's not good.
Good luck! |

I copied and pasted my resume. The fonts and Italics are a little different. Before I started college I worked for Brunswick Container which Ball bought and closed. I then went to their NJ plant to train them on some equipment that was taken from our plant. I would like to include this information. The only concern is that it was back in 1997-98. While I was in college I worked in computer labs, registrar's office, resturants, and for resident life.
The position I am applying for is a System Analyst. It would be a phone based position where I would assist various plants/individuals resolve their issues with the new inventory program that is being installed. I know I need to put more technical computer abilities.
I am still working on the cover letter. I may have that tomorrow.
Thanks for your time!!!!

Kim,
Won't you have a look at the organization of the European CV Format? It has everythingyou need to place in a resume. Not that yours isn't good, theinfo I mean, but you lack a proper eye-catching categorization of the ideas. Let me find the link...
http://www.cvtips.com/career_advice_forum/here-vp10484.html#10484
You can download it from there. It is very helpful, especially if you're not acustomed to building up resumes. Other suggestions:
- The information you want to place in the resume but you think is old....you can place it in a "relevant information" area.
- the resume career objective should definitely be more thicker. Think of a more complex phrase. To be short, your objective should include your skills , achievements , the position you are seeking, the specific skills you want to learn and develop, the kind of company you would like to work for.
- if you build up your cover letter, remember to talk about WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR THE COMPANY. Make them understand they NEED you.
- do not place numbers when writing down your computer skills, and if your computer skills are of great interest, do not place them in the back of your resume.
This is it for now. Hope this helped. Have a nice day! |

Thanks for all your help. Unfortunatly the link didn't take me to a format or example of a good resume. I fattend it up, used more key words, as well as angled the objective for the specific job. I also added a related experience section that listed job tites, company, and year (to show when I worked for the company in another division).
Hopefully I will hear from them soon!!
Thanks again!
If you do find that link, please send it to me. I have a feeling this is going to be the time of year that other opportunities will arise. I would like to keep working on my resume so that it will be AMAZING!

phone interview? Well, congrats on that, my friend and be careful because if you don't know how to manage such an interview you might not get the result you are expecting now. Chill out, speak clearly, offer firm answers and details when they are necessary. Use your pitch of voice diligently, in order to compensate your lack of body language (you know...in a face to face interview your words can be completed with your body successfully).
Congratulations again and do tell us how it went....we want to grow jealous on you ;') |
