Alright, so i am 15, looking for a saturday job that will pay well enough to help me buy a new bike, i could do with earning up to £1000. I have a few places in mind, but i am unsure if they would employ me, i am asking here because i would rather find out before wasting my time and being told no by the employer.
Places like garages, bike shops (as i am interested in bikes) hands on work baisically, would having good knowladge of the subject (such as bikes) help me get a saturday job?
I live in Teesside area if that helps.
Thanks in advance.

From personal experience, few to no businesses will employ U16s, i.e. people who have not finished their GCSE examinations. As far as I am aware, from the last Friday in June, you can work full time, i.e. no restrictions on how many or how few hours you can work, by law, obviously, working 24 hours a day seven days a week might tire you out slightly. Typically employers will not look for people 'younger' than this, due to the fact that by law, they put themselves at more of a risk, should you have an accident in the workplace, because (even though I am sure you all would be) responsible for yourselves, "there's always one" and for that reason, employers do not take the risk, as there are plenty of 16/17+ people looking for jobs.
I personally, have a Saturday job (and only Saturday with holiday work) at McDonald's (yes, laugh, everyone else does, but money's money!) and to be honest, I'm lovin' it there. (Cheap gag, sorry!). But I had applied to them before I being 16 and they had said that until that last Friday in June they wouldn't employ me. Last summer (2007) I applied to a few places, and McDonald's was the only one to reply, to be honest, it's not bad at all working there, I've been there near 10 months now.
If you're 13/14/15 it is probably best to ask any relatives if they have a small job going for you, or a paper round or something (although for £12 a week or whatever you end up with, I don't see it being worth it personally!), but I would be extremely surprised if you could get yourself a job at a retail store or something.
On a side-note, don't follow stereotypes when you consider places to work. Take me and my friend, I work at McDonald's, he works at River Island, a place where people would generally thing you get a better job, he only earns 10p/hr more than me for a start. We've been working at our respective businesses for the same period of time. He gets bored off of his ar** re-arranging shoes, straightening hangers, whilst I, have a laugh, and am busy all day, so time flies. Also, I get free food on my break! (lol)
When I went for my McDonald's interview, I wore a suit (-ish), as did the most part of the other people waiting to be interviewed, but one guy in front of me, wore a tracksuit, and I saw him get turned away, as the people who were accepted got given a neat little white slip, so it does go to show that a good first impression counts for a lot, even for just a Saturday job.
Prepare a CV, and a good covering letter if you don't have an application form for the job you're applying for, and as stated previously in this thread, don't treat it casually, if you want a job, you're not going to be given it on a plate, there's always someone else out there who wants that job, be it serving up fries and BigMacs at McDonald's or straightening hangers in River Island!
Most jobs pay in the region of about £4.25 - £6.25 for U18 part-time workers, the minimum wage for U18s is £3.30/hr. The minimum you can be paid will increase when you are 18, and subsequently when you are 21, should you still be doing hourly paid work.
Hope that helps, most of it has probably been said already, but I hope it provides you with something to take on board!
Alex - 17 - Hertfordshire. |
