Hi reader,

I hope you can provide me some help or simply use this to somehow help you.

I feel lost with my problem. I am relatively young (26), and wasting my life in a career that I am not burning for. I have always been ambitious and a quick learner who likes to be good at what I do in as short a time as possible, so I have always made choices depending on how "challenging" they were. My career began strangely after I graduated as a telecom engineer; first job was in the SW configuration management field, at a telco company. I realized I did not want to go down that path after 1½ years, so I decided to try going for the field which everyone at school was talking about: Consulting.

I have now been working as a systems integration consultant for a consulting firm which has technology as its core business, for over a year and I am fading inside every morning when I have to explain to myself why I need to go to work. I love the fact that I can try so many different roles instead of having a permanent role; however I do not like the core of our business, i.e. helping other businesses become more successful or implement a good IT solution to support their business. I hate the thought of working just to "pay the bills". I love motivation but can hardly remember the last time I truly felt it.

A lot of retrospective thinking has lead me to the dream of building my own company with the purpose of helping others and spreading love, health, and harmony in the world. All I can think of is being my own boss, work hard to achieve my dream while having enough success to experience financial freedom, all while connecting with individuals and doing something good for them. The only way I make myself go through the day is by learning as much as I can so I can someday apply it to my own business.

I wish to feel more empowered when it comes to the type of work I want to do. By financial freedom, I mean that I want to be able to take a 2-3 months vacation if I want to to travel and experience other cultures, have a nice home by the ocean, and be able to pay the usual expenses (rent, car, food, etc.), once my business is up and running whether it takes one or a few years.

Being an engineer who thinks a lot with the heart instead of the mind, I can't help but wanting to make the world a better place, which is why I mention spreading love and harmony. No matter where my rational thoughts take me I always seem to return to that in the end.

To those who claim that work is work and fulfillment is to be found elsewhere, I need work which makes me fulfilled and gives me a sense of purpose. It's nothing short of depressing for me if I don't wake up in the morning wanting to go to work to feel fulfilled.

I have been going round and round on the net reading a ton of articles and taking assessment tests the last few months, and even purchased a couple of books along the way, but I am hoping I can get some "real" help or advice this way.

Have I made a career mistake? How do I figure out what to do with my life to find happiness?

Thank you for taking the time to read my story.

Sincerely,
C

hey C,
There are millions around the world in the same situation. Few of them achieve what you are trying to achieve, these people have all one thing in common they risked something, in order to achieve financial freedom.

Of course you need the rest of the recipe a good idea, luck, motivation, starting capital. But without doing that first step and deciding that you will have to endure a period of being uncomfortable and possible risking your current job and life style in order to improve them in the future.
I have no clear answer for your question. The answer to "why I am here, how can I be more satisfied, why are we leaving " is different to each person.

The answer has to come from within.
If you get high on helping people, start by doing some voluntary work in your field. I am sure there are NGOs that need IT solutions ... this of course after office hours ...

Maybe, satisfaction come from appreciating what you have and building on it, rather than trying to rebuild everything from scratch whenever the boredom of routine sets in.

Hi !Smile
Though I am younger than you , I understand you perfectly ...because I am still studying and I had and I still have dreams and hopes of trying to be a part of a project with positive results , making a real difference in the world , helping others ...I am going to be an engineer myself too when I graduate so..your dreams and plans sound pretty much like mine !
While earning enough money to pay the bills and not only those it's not a fulfillment for you...here's what one of the 'millions around the world in the same situation' (almost)-me would do :I would work somewhere for a decent amount of money in the domain and in my free time I would do volonteer work . That would be a fulfillment for me !Smile
