| I have been unemployed for three years. I have a degree in pharmaceuticals. It seems to be very difficult to get a job in the industry at the moment. I am not sure if it's my qualifications to the younger graduates are taking all the jobs. I am over 40, and the job search has always confused. Money wise I can afford to be out of a job for another year or 2 but now I am considering jobs out of my industry... this could be the end of me. I really enjoy working in pharmaceuticals |

Before going to another industry, have you considered different jobs within the same industry.
Alo, consider taking some courses in your field & continue your job search. Include the courses you are attending in your resume. This will show the employers that you are continualy pursuing advancing your career....etc.

I definitely wouldn't give up as the pharmacutical industry is constantly booming, and there is a ton of money in the industry. I am actually surprised that you are having trouble finding work in the field. As KA suggested, perhaps consider another job in the industry, as you obviously have a pretty large knowledge of the field, and employers will always be looking for that. Being out of the field for 3 years does hurt you because everything is changing so quickly, but a college course or two could easily bring you up to speed and offer something attractive to put on your resume. Best of luck!

I was just looking through some of the jobs they had listed under Pharmacuticals at Salary.com and it does look like the average salaries vary quite a bit across the industry, so I guess I was wrong in stating the entire industry is booming. For example, while a Clinical Pharmacist has an average salary of $88,697, and a Clinical Research Manager with $93,413, a Lab Assistent is only $34,451, and a Chemist is only $42,763. Now I'm not saying these are awful salaries for the jobs, but I was under the impression that the industry as a whole was more booming.

I don't think that would be a very good alternative as he is already over 40, and unless he plans on working for the next 25 years, its really going to be hard to get the business off the ground and running. He would also need a whole lot of start up money to cover the expenses of buying all the expensive medication. Plus, the pharmacutical industry covers a lot more than just pharmacies. He didn't mention what part of the industry he was in, so he might not even know anything about pharmacy. Nice suggestion, but not very realalistic in my opinion.

I can empathize, because I too mirror your situation. I have a PhD in Education, and feel closed out of the job market. I do not have the answers but can offer solace. |

| This is not the end for you if you don't want it, especially that you say you really love pharmaceuticals. I would definitely try some cold contact technique and go for some unadvertised jobs in the field. Also, due to your age, I would also recommend you try some networking technique, that is to appeal to friends, relatives or anybody else you know and let them know you're looking for a job. |
