|
|
Hey everyone, here's my story.. maybe I can get some advice.
My parents that let me stay with them for long period of time... never forcing me to get a job.... so I hit 24 and have no work experience.
I went to job interview and they asked me "You're 24, what have you been doing previous until now?", and I told them the truth... "didn't work at all, lived with my parents..."
I don't think they found this idea very entertaining, because they didn't hire me. What's best way to answer this question?
So also, I'd like list of jobs/occupations that I could apply at... that might hire me, I have no work experience, I do have GED. But because of my age, are there any jobs that are willing to take a chance on me????
Lastly- I was involved in some silly crime when I was 12. This has been erased from my record, do I ever have to put this on a job application?
Thanks for your time.

Skycoder010-
Short answer to "when" is every day.
I don't think that 12 year old thing is relevant, check it out with whoever handles those records.
But you're going to have to get some training, and you will need to be able to show some work experience, even if it means doing voluntary work. Casual or part time will also do, but get some, anyway you can.
One of the problems with that interview is you didn't show any employment credentials. No work history, no clear area of skills, and unless your educational refs are excellent, no strong claims.
Suggestions:
1. What do you like doing? Sometimes that can be a career path.
2. Do some forward planning, figure out how to train for jobs. Some basic skills, like retail, are very portable. Not too flashy, admittedly, but it means you can go for anything in retail. Some colleges can give you the fundamentals in short courses.Other possibilities are administration, government work, or other entry level positions.
3. In any job interview, it's competitive. You need to be able to show some sort of quality which gives you preference. That means proven personal abilities.
You're behind the eight ball here, and you need to get out of that position, pronto.
Just for the record, I didn't get a steady, real, job until I was 25. I was in much the same position. Did an exam, got a government job.
I promise you, it's worth doing. |

Even if you get a job that is less than what you are seeking, at least it is a start on acquiring a job history. That is one way of looking at it. And as for the thing on your record, usually your history as a minor is sealed up when you turn of age unless it is a major offense. I don't think it is necessary to disclose it unless it is going to be directly related to any job you will have.

While you didn't work, you may have done other things, like training for a sport, part-me baby sitting...etc. So think of what you have been doing & list these things.
Some say it's not a good time to call an employer Monday morning or Friday afternoon.

Try to turn anything you have done into a positive and relate it to the job you're going for.
Try to avoid talking about things which look like a waste of time - like I've spent my time sleeping and watching television.
Be positive and make them understand that you're looking to have a fresh start... |
