What is the difference pre employment screening vs background check?
I am applying for a job in IT, "THEY" have asked me to sign a form that says I agree to all pre employment screening tests that are necessary in order to be approved for this position.
I am familiar with the term background check, but I never heard about pre employment screening. Are these similar in nature?
I was thinking that pre employment screening could involve medical and psychological test these would not be carried out in a background check.
Is it legal if they test me for HIV, or other disease without my knowledge, and how can I make sure that they do not. Once they have my blood they really can do anything with it.
I have received this pre employment screening form via email and did not have the opportunity to challenge it.
However I must say I am desperate for a job and pre employment screening or not I need this job desperately.
Has anyone recently been in the same situation ? |

The term itself is pretty vague and could really mean anything the company wants it to mean. If you're that worried about it, I would just ask them about it, I doubt they're going to try to hide anything. As to whether or not its legal, it probably says in the form they want you to sign, that they basically have full control to do/ask anything they want to you prior to hiring you. Yes, it potentially could border on the privacy line, but most companies are pretty straightforward, and just use this to test you for drugs, and any other obvious conditions that would prevent you from completing your job. I would just go ahead with it, if you feel violated at any time, you can always stop, and start the search for another job. Good luck!

Have you ever experienced such a situation where an employer was looking for something that they weren't up front with? Janis.

Pre employment screening is typically a series of employment tests conducted by the employer to assist them in their hiring decision. The most used types of employment testing fall into 5 categories - personality tests, skills tests, aptitude tests, integrity tests and drug tests.
A background check is a number of reports collected about a candidate for employment purposes. The FCRA (Fair Credit Reporting Act) defines a background check as a consumer report. The report can vary from just checking a social security number to an in-depth investigation of education, work, criminal, credit, social and lifestyle history, including job references. All rather useless when the "experts" themselves tell us that most hiring decisions are based on "first impressions" and made within the first five minutes of the so-called interview.

Yep and we're all supposed to roll over and take it and smile and not think a thing about it.
Turn it around. What would the reaction be if the job-seeker asked:
"Excuse me. What exactly is your turnover rate? What do you think you could do to lower that number?"
"How much did your company earn last year and out of that amount, what percentage did you budget for employee salaries and paychecks?"
"If I come to work for you company, can you guarantee me that five years from now you'll still be in operation, in this building, and under the same owners and managment?"
Sooner or later (probably later because this world has done one hell of a job at instilling fear of authority figures and employers into people)...but sooner or later people are going to quit worhsipping these stupid legal fictions and man-made institutions and start demanding that employers realized something vitally important: The prospector needed the mule far more than the other way around.
And since it's current as I write this: Anyone watching the hilarious misadventures of the banking industry as it collapses and still will try to tell me that I should have "respect" and "admiration" for the "rich who create the jobs" and the rest of the mindless, empty blather that accompanies these discussions, well, anyone still choosing to believe the lies of the last forty years or so is just one more soul who has been brainwashed into believing that nothing else in life is of any worth or value other than career and money. |
