I'm looking to go for my degree in accounting. I always loved math and money. Does this pay as well as people say that it pays? Is it worth my time and effort to pursue?
Anyone that does accounting How do you like it?
Does it stay interesting or boring?
How long when you start does it take to make the big bucks ( if any)?
How difficult is accounting to start and finish?
How many people actually get through the courses and go big time?
I just to make sure I'm not making a wrong career choice. John |

Hey John!
Accounting is an excellent career choice. As jimmyQ did mention a lot of the previous work with math has been eliminated with constantly newer and faster technology, but you do still deal a lot with numbers, and definitely have to be goal oriented, much like you are in math. As I mentioned you also have to be fairly good with computers, as much of the work previously done by hand is now automated in programs, but if you don't know how these programs work, or can't learn fast, you're going to be at a considerable disadvantage. I personally am not in accounting, but my associates who are say it doesn't really ever get boring. Granted there are going to be a lot of standard reports that are due every month/quarter/year, but you'll find this in a lot of jobs. Accounting often offers the oppertunity to work on special projects, and branch out a little bit, getting away from the daily grind for a couple weeks or so. Overall its an excellent career if it matches your interests. Good luck!

Accounting is a very flexible career.
I've seen Mums doing it part time from home, and I've heard of high flying types working in Tokyo and Hong Kong etc for multi-billion dollar companies.
So you can start off with very little outlay and training, and go from there.
Here in Australia, the main certificate to aim for is a CPA - I expect there is something similar in whatever country you come from.

Ya, accounting is a very wide field, and as you said the jobs range from very small ones to very large ones. In the United States, we also have CPA's (Certified Public Accountants) and a lot of people do strive for that, but also a lot of people focus on private work for companies which is a bit different from public accounting, but still dealing with a lot of math. Either method is a great option, and if you just take a general accounting class you should get a sample of both, and decide which one interests you more. Good luck!

I agree with what the other ones said... accounting is a great career choice that offers lots of possibilities and fits lots of people. I know people that do it as a part time job, and as well I know people having a wage with lots of "zeroes" for doing it.
If you like it and you feel it suits you than go for it! |
