I am in the job market after over 18 years on my last job and a few months off to rest. I can handle the reason for leaving and questions on that job.

However, some applications want to know one's complete work history, especially a government application. I left a job in 1987 after 11 months because I absolutely despised my boss. He was a screamer and did not care who was around while he screamed, if you proved him wrong he screamed louder, was obnoxious, unreasonable, and a downright jerk. He was tolerated by upper management because he was very good at his basic job and they ignored his treatment of his underlings.

I enjoyed the work, made good money, and could do the job. I put up with his screaming and yelling at others and me for 11 months, but one day had enough and gave my notice to his boss.

What do I put as reason for leaving on applications that require my job history that long ago? Since it was only 2 jobs back, I don't know if anyone would check things out or not.

I dont't know that a job that long ago would be considered that important. Maybe putting that you left due to personal reasons with work environment?? I guess the best thing would be to list the job and put that you resigned in order to take a position elsewhere. This isn't exactly a lie, but if the issue comes up where the interviewer wants to know exactly, why, then tell them the real reason. Nobody wnats to and should have to work in an environment like that. I would say that since you spent 18 years at the job immediately after, that you are probably reliable and a hard worker.

This tells about why honesty is the best policy on a resume. When in doubt, list it and be ready for questions.

No lies in your resumes or during the interview, ok? Very Happy not even innocent lies Very Happy
Ok, listen.....the job and the resigning circumstances you have mentioned....don't worry about them because they are of no importance to a prospective employer. Your being dedicated to the previous job( 18 years???????? wow) shows you are suitable for practically any job in the world from this point of view. Don't even bother mention any reason for leaving that old job. You just say as lexa said...you left for a better paid position or for a position which enabled you to get promoted.
