My SO just got fired from his job--he's a mortgage banker at a large loan company. They're firing like 400 people; the mortgage business is horrible and this place has been putting more and more demands on their employees and firing more and more (he suspects they may even be on the way to going out of business). So it's not like he got fired because he was doing a bad job; he was busting his *ss for these people but just happened to be not doing as well as others.

He was given a choice: he can resign tomorrow or be fired in ten days. He wants to resign so he doesn't have the black mark of getting fired on his resume (if he resigns they'll say he resigned and only say good things about him). My mom says he should let them fire him so he gets unemployment.

Any advice on which he should do? On one hand, he could get unemployment rather than nothing (and being as we were planning on getting an apartment together as soon as I start my new job, I'd like him to have some income, obviously); on the other, that's no good if he can't then get another job because he has to say he got fired.

I advise against the "tag" of being fired if at all prevented, just because of what it could do to him later. How bad is his financial situation?? By the sound of it there is no real guarantee that they will be around later for a reference if they are doing so poorly, and he might do best to get dismissed if he can chance going without unemployment briefly. I would be checking with the unemployment office and see what he would qualify for. Sounds like he is being terminated without his choice, and should qualify for unemployment no matter what. But if possible he needs to leave on the best of terms for later on.

Goodness, hope all works out, Katja. You're a smart gal, you two will get this figured out. Good luck. Let me know if you need anything.

Katja...two things:

- if he is being fired and he specifies the reasons, he'll be ok
- if he resigns, he'll still have some explaining to give.

But it is better to resign and find some good job in a short period and explain his resignation choice than to forever explaining the reasons for which he has been fired.

Thanks, guys.

Hrm, looks like he maybe wouldn't have been able to get unemployment anyway. I'm sure their stance is that he lost his job because his sales weren't high enough...hence, it was his fault. Technically true, but when their standards keep going up and up to weed people out...

Obviously this messes up our plans a bit but I think I'll still be able to afford rent on my own if we get someplace cheap (my only worry with that is we might end up getting not as good as we could've on two salaries, and then be stuck there after he gets a new job!). But oh well.

I just hope his quest for something high-paying doesn't throw him right back into the same long-hours sales environment.

Okay, so maybe you live in a less-than-perfect apartment for a few months. That doesn't matter so much. Just keep encouraging him along on his job search and do what you can together. Still, you might be able to win the unemployment thing. At least, try....keep me posted.
